Senior Structural Engineer 2 - Grid at Sargent & Lundy
Directly apply your knowledge of materials, structural analysis, structural steel design, and reinforced concrete design on a variety of power transmission upgrades and modifications. You will work in an engineering and design team to prepare calculations, document designs, and specifications that support client recommendations and reviews.
Responsibilities
Investigate, troubleshoot, and solve a wide variety of structural engineering issues.
Perform structural analysis and detailed design of steel frames, connections, concrete members, equipment, and foundations.
Develop integrated structural designs and perform supporting calculations for planned work.
Interface directly with clients and communicate technical information.
Prepare technical specifications for structural materials.
Review work performed by others, including calculations and drawing preparation.
Coordinate and provide guidance to other engineers, project managers, client personnel, and suppliers.
Review existing facilities to propose upgrades and replacements, presenting findings and recommendations.
Participate in peer learning through Sargent & Lundy’s Communities of Practice.
Travel to client and vendor offices for design reviews and to substations for construction coordination and field verification of designs.
This role offers a hybrid work arrangement: three days a week in the office with two days remote.
A generous relocation package is available depending on location.
Qualifications
BSCE or MSCE from an ABET-accredited program with strong background in behavioral materials, structural analysis, steel design, and reinforced concrete design.
7+ years of experience as a practicing structural engineer, preferably on design and upgrade of electrical substations.
Effective communication with clients at appropriate technical detail.
Ability to perform occasional walk‑downs and attend scoping meetings at client sites.
Experience writing and supporting documentation for structural engineering calculations.
Consistently complete assignments within budget and schedule with high accuracy.
Technical knowledge of structural engineering, including analysis for supports, loads, and design integrity.
Familiarity with design codes and standards such as IBC, ASCE 7, AISC, and ACI 318.
Proficiency in at least one of the following: MathCad, STAAD PRO, SAP2000, SAFE, RISA 3D, RISA Floor.
Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
Valued but Not Required
PE license
Experience in designing light industrial building structures
