Job Summary San José State University’s Student Wellness Center (SWC) supports student opportunity and lifelong well-being by providing high-quality primary, specialty, and mental healthcare, as well as health promotion services. The Registered Nurse plays a vital role in delivering student-centered medical care within an outpatient clinical setting comparable to a physician group practice. Reporting to the Clinic Manager, the Registered Nurse provides direct patient care following established protocols, supports medical providers during examinations and procedures, and assists with limited first aid for campus visitors and work-related injuries for university employees. This position contributes to a collaborative care environment that prioritizes access, service excellence, and student success.

Key Responsibilities

Triage patients under protocol direction and document symptoms, medical history, and vital signs

Administer immunizations, TB tests, medications, and perform diagnostic tasks such as EKGs, vision/hearing tests, and spirometry

Prepare and assist patients for examinations and procedures, including IV therapy and injections

Maintain accurate entries in the electronic medical record system

Order lab work and imaging according to provider or standing orders

Support clinic operations by maintaining supply inventory, sterilizing equipment, and ensuring clinical workspaces are organized and prepared

Provide patient education and respond to clinical questions in person and by phone

Serve as charge nurse when designated and assist with onboarding new clinical staff

Participate in staff meetings, health education initiatives, accreditation preparation, and continuous quality improvement projects

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Thorough knowledge of general methods, procedures, and practices of an outpatient medical facility, including working knowledge of clinic operations.

Thorough knowledge of professional nursing principles, methods and procedures; anatomy and physiology; medical supplies and equipment used in nursing practice; and the uses and effects of medications and narcotics

Working knowledge of the applicable state and federal laws and regulations pertaining to registered nursing and the scope of practice of various staff within the facility

Ability to effectively apply nursing knowledge and demonstrate proper techniques and apply specialized skills in performing nursing duties

Ability to accurately observe and record symptoms, behaviors, and reactions to treatments in order to make a nursing diagnosis

Ability to analyze emergency situations and triage appropriately

Working knowledge of electronic health record systems

Ability to maintain patient confidentiality and privacy in compliance with applicable state and federal laws and regulations; appropriately handle sensitive communications with employees and external agencies

Effective communication across a variety of venues. Must possess excellent customer service and public relations skills

Ability to effectively establish and maintain cooperative working relationships within a diverse multicultural environment

Required Qualifications

High school diploma or equivalent

Completion of a professional nursing program in an approved school of nursing or by additional preparation as approved by the California Board of Registered Nursing

Possess and maintain a valid license as a registered nurse in the State of California and certification in CPR/AED

At least one (1) year of professional nursing experience or equivalent combination of education and experience which provides the required knowledge and abilities

Preferred Qualifications

Bachelor of Science in Nursing

At least three (3) years of professional nursing experience

Experience as a nurse working in a college health environment

Experience working with multidisciplinary teams and experience supporting multiple different healthcare providers/specialty areas

Compensation Classification: Registered Nurse II Anticipated Hiring Range: $8,092/month - $8,254/month (Step 13 – Step 14) CSU Salary Range: $6,381/month - $9,296/month (Step 1 – Step 20) San José State University offers employees a comprehensive benefits package typically worth 30-35% of your base salary.
