Description We’re seeking an Engineering Manager to lead and contribute alongside software engineers within our Platform team. AppFolio is building the platform where real estate comes to do business, serving as the foundation for all the great experiences we build. Our mission is to empower property managers to manage large volumes of prospective tenants efficiently, improving communication and automating processes for maximum effectiveness. This engineering leader will manage and develop a team of world-class engineers responsible for building and maintaining both user experiences and platform services at scale. The ideal candidate is passionate about servant leadership, personal development, and has deep hands-on technical experience. They should understand and communicate the business impact of technical projects and possess strong system design skills to craft and deliver an effective engineering strategy. This person thrives in a collaborative environment, applying Agile methodologies to help cross-functional teams build innovative products for our customers. Your impact:
Lead, coach, and support a team of passionate engineers, fostering a high-performance culture of technical excellence. Drive technical innovation by designing and delivering scalable, high-performance, and reliable software solutions. Lead architectural discussions and contribute hands-on to system design, ensuring robust and future-proof platform services. Oversee the entire software development lifecycle, ensuring high-quality code and continuous improvement. Resolve performance bottlenecks, scalability challenges, and reliability issues to create industry-leading leasing experiences. Manage delivery using Agile best practices, including continuous delivery, integration, and test-driven development. Promote a SMART codebase (Simple, Maintainable, Agile, Refactored, Tested) for a SAFE product (Secure, Available, Fast, Easy). Champion best practices in cloud architecture, distributed systems, and modern engineering methodologies. Ensure the team understands how their work fits into AppFolio’s broader goals. Skills & Knowledge:
BS, MS, or Ph.D. in Computer Science or related field, or equivalent experience. Proven experience leading engineering teams through startup to mid-lifecycle stages. 2+ years managing and coaching engineers. 5+ years designing, developing, and maintaining large-scale platforms. Deep technical expertise in system design and engineering strategy. Experience with Agile practices and continuous delivery. Exceptional interpersonal skills, positive attitude, collaboration focus. High initiative, autonomy, problem-solving skills. Preferred Skills & Knowledge:
Experience with BI reporting systems, dashboards, React charts, visualization libraries, especially in enterprise B2B markets. Experience building platform-as-a-product and self-service tools for internal teams. Compensation & Benefits:
The expected base salary range is $167,200 - $209,000, depending on skills and experience. This does not include additional benefits or bonuses. Regular full-time employees are eligible for benefits. More details are available
