Surgical Technologist support patient care in the perioperative setting by assisting surgeons and nursing staff before, during, and after surgical procedures. The role of the Surgical Technician is to assist the OR team in the care of patients, equipment, and supplies. The Surgical Technician in Surgery provides care for adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients. The surgical technologist in the first scrub role handles the instruments, supplies, and equipment necessary during the surgical procedure. The Surgical Technician understands the procedure being performed and anticipates the needs of the surgeon. The Surgical Technician has the necessary knowledge and ability to ensure quality patient care during the operative procedure and is constantly on vigil for maintenance of the sterile field. When the Surgical Technician is in the second scrub role they assist the surgeon and/or surgical assistant during the operative procedure by carrying out tasks including sponging, suctioning, cutting suture, holding retractors, and manipulating the endoscopic camera. Qualifications include: graduate of an accredited school of Certified Operating Room Technicians (CORT) or CORT preferred, BLS required, and one to two years previous OR experience preferred.
