The Environmental Health and Safety Manager will assist the Director in implementing, coordinating, and managing the comprehensive loss prevention program at BRCC. The ideal candidate will have the knowledge, skills, and ability to enhance overall efficiency, effectiveness, functionality, and performance of the department. Strong communication skills are essential to identify areas of improvement and formulate action plans and strategies for approval and implementation.
The position requires a strategic leader who can work independently or within a team structure to achieve identified goals and objectives. The candidate must be able to respond to emergency situations; lift up to 30 pounds; walk for long periods; climb stairs, ladders, etc.; work a flexible schedule as the workload demands; and be on an on‑call schedule as determined by the Director.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Manage development, planning, implementation, organization, coordination, scheduling, and instruction of the Comprehensive Safety Training Program (quarterly/monthly safety meetings, emergency management training/drills, fire drills, monitoring and tracking compliance). Assist the Director with identification, development, planning, implementation, and monitoring of the BRCC Comprehensive Loss Prevention Program.
- Coordinate all agency inspection programs, input cited deficiencies into Facility Services work order system, evaluate EHS work orders, and provide progress reports to the Director. Communicate deficiencies to responsible departments. Develop accident statistics and prepare summary reports.
- Request and review official driving records and authorize College employees to drive for business. Maintain Authorized Driver Log. Coordinate departmental calendar with college events and Facility Services calendars. Obtain Hold Harmless Agreements and insurance/liability/safety related forms for college events.
- Monitor and respond to communications via the EHS departmental e‑mail account; communicate with college personnel, students, and visitors. Perform administrative tasks such as copying, filing, data entry, answering phones, etc. Supervise student workers and other departmental personnel as needed.
- Analyze and follow State of Louisiana and BRCC Accounting and Finance policies, procedures, and guidelines to obtain quotes for services, verify completion, and review invoices for accuracy.
- Coordinate and collaborate with internal stakeholders and external agencies (Sedgwick CMS, Louisiana Division of Administration, Governor’s Office of Homeland Security, Mayor’s Office, FEMA) to investigate and process declared emergency damages/claims and incident investigations.
- Perform other assigned duties.
Required Education
• Bachelor’s degree in any related field.
Required Experience
• Two years of professional level experience in safety inspection or training, emergency preparedness, risk analysis, or loss prevention. Must be a strong, detail‑oriented team player with proven verbal and written communication skills.
Additional professional or sub‑professional level experience can substitute for the bachelor’s degree based on thirty semester hours for one year of experience. Six years of professional experience in a safety program can also substitute.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office.
- Advanced knowledge of OSHA, NFPA, EPA, DEQ, ORM, and related standards, codes, guidelines, laws, rules, and regulations.
- Ability to work independently or as part of a team to accomplish set goals and objectives.
- Basic understanding of project/construction management principles.
- Basic understanding of industrial hygiene principles, practices, and field methods.
- Proficient written and verbal communication skills.
- Possession of a valid driver’s license and ability to become authorized to operate college vehicles under the Safe Driver Program.
Preferred Education
Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Architecture, Occupational Safety and Health, Industrial Hygiene, Toxicology, Construction Management or closely related field.
Preferred Experience
Professional level EHS experience within a higher education setting, fire/safety/building inspection of higher education institutions, or investigation of accidents/incidents.
Preferred Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Application of advanced industrial hygiene principles, practices, and field methods.
- Inspection of higher education institutions for deficiencies related to applicable OSHA, NFPA, ORM, DEQ, EPA standards.
- Effective communication with a broad range of customers.
- Project/construction management duties related to building renovation and new construction.
