Job Type: Full‑time

Shift: Swing (3:30 pm – 12:00 am) Shift Differential: $0.50 per hour Days Off: Friday, Saturday

About DESC DESC (Downtown Emergency Service Center) is a nonprofit that helps individuals with homelessness, substance use disorders, and serious mental illness achieve health and well‑being through comprehensive services, treatment, and housing. We serve nearly 3,000 people each day and are recognized nationally for innovation in homelessness solutions.

Job Definition Residential Counselors manage day‑to‑day operations at our Permanent Supportive Housing Projects, assisting residents with daily needs and addressing challenges related to severe mental illness and substance use disorders.

Major Duties and Responsibilities

Interact with residents in the general milieu and common areas.

Assist clinical staff in coordinating services, contacting outside providers as needed.

Engage residents through creative strategies that build trust and confidence.

Initiate and promote on‑site activities, therapeutic support groups, outings, and community meetings.

Manage building operations in the absence of other project and clinical staff.

Operate lobby office functions, including visitor check‑in/out, answering phones, and monitoring security systems.

Maintain safety and security by monitoring access areas and enforcing project rules.

Intervene in crises, respond to emergencies, and coordinate with emergency response systems.

Document significant resident and building events in a daily log; review the log daily.

Assist with room turnovers, new resident leasing and orientation; rent collection and facilities inspections.

Respond to resident complaints.

Collaborate with clinical, maintenance, and visiting staff; refer residents to appropriate services.

Initiate maintenance requests and respond appropriately.

Participate in staff meetings and trainings.

Assist with additional property management functions as assigned.

Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Basic understanding of homelessness and the characteristics of the homeless adult population.

Effective communication and teamwork across diverse backgrounds.

Ability to work with clients displaying a wide range of behaviors.

Commitment to cooperation, continuity across programs, and respect for clients.

Preferred Qualifications

BA degree in social or behavioral science.

Residential property management experience.

Experience with mental illness and substance use challenges.

Current Washington State driver’s license, insurable driving record, ability to drive agency van and transport tenants.

Physical Demands Required: Sitting, communication, lifting up to 40 lb, computer operation; vision: close, distance, color, peripheral, depth, focus adjustment.

Salary $30.50 – $33.69 per hour
