Phlebotomist I (40 hrs, 9:30 am‑6:00 pm, SEIU)
Responsible for providing quality, customer‑oriented laboratory services including registration, specimen collection, specimen processing, and related duties. Performs venipuncture on patients and maintains necessary equipment and supplies.
Essential Responsibilities / Duties
Perform venipunctures according to laboratory policies and procedures, including timed specimens, blood cultures, pediatric and neonatal specimens.
Positively identify all patients and verify identification of specimens, labeling them according to laboratory policies.
Receive and prepare laboratory specimens prior to analysis, including study specimens, random and 24‑hour urines, and send‑out specimens.
Centrifuge and aliquot specimens, and follow all special handling instructions according to laboratory policies.
Optimize routing of specimens and work benches, prioritizing stat and routine specimens, and distribute them to appropriate lab sections within specified time frames.
Assist in pickup and delivery of specimens as needed.
Prepare all workstations with essential supplies.
Monitor and record daily temperatures, performing scheduled maintenance of equipment as needed.
Complete all appropriate logs for documentation and troubleshooting, and communicate to supervisor.
Utilize technical training and acquire in‑depth knowledge of the LIS and its functions.
Perform order/entry, inquiry, crediting, and other basic LIS functions in the laboratory information system according to policies and procedures.
Perform patient registration functions in EPIC registration system, including patient demographic updates, insurance validation and eligibility checks, and assigning of medical record numbers.
Answer the telephone according to department policy and procedure.
Conform to hospital standards of performance and conduct, including patient rights, to provide the best possible customer service and patient care.
Utilize hospital’s behavioral standards as the basis for decision making and to support the department and the hospital’s mission and goals.
Manage time appropriately and meet BMC standards for attendance and punctuality.
Attend department meetings, deliver reports in a timely fashion, and document activities related to quality improvement as assigned.
Assist in training new lab support technicians and phlebotomy students.
Complete all laboratory and hospital safety, compliance, and competency training as assigned, following established hospital infection control and safety procedures.
Perform special procedures as requested by supervisors, assistants, and specialists.
Job Requirements High School Diploma or GED. Completion of a NAACLS accredited phlebotomy program.
Experience Phlebotomy, and/or specimen processing experience preferred.
Knowledge and Skills
Excellent English communication skills (oral and written) and interpersonal skills to communicate effectively with internal and external contacts in a courteous and customer‑service manner.
Excellent analytical and critical‑thinking skills; strong attention to detail, organizational ability, and follow‑through.
Must be able to maintain strict confidentiality of all personal/health sensitive information.
Ability to effectively handle challenging situations and balance multiple priorities.
Compensation Range $20.50 – $26.52 per hour
This range offers an estimate based on the minimum job qualifications. Compensation is determined by education, experience, and licensure/certifications directly related to position requirements.
