Overview The San Diego State University (SDSU) Institute for Transformative Education (ITE) is an institute under the College of Education dedicated to championing first‑generation, low‑income students. The Upward Bound (UB) Classic and STAR programs provide comprehensive academic support, mentorship, and essential resources to eligible high‑school students in the San Diego area. The UB Advisor implements program objectives, plans activities, collects data, and collaborates with high‑school counselors to support student success.

Responsibilities

General Program Administration

Learn and adhere to program and grant policies to achieve objectives.

Maintain a schedule serving three assigned school sites (El Cajon Valley High School, Morse High School, Mount Miguel High School) and SDSU.

Work in‑person at assigned sites; adhere to common working hours Monday‑Friday 8 AM‑4:30 PM and adjust schedule to work at least one Saturday per month.

Serve as Residential Advisor during the Summer Residential Program.

Program Development (15%)

Plan, implement, and co‑facilitate new student orientations for students, parents, and families.

Assist in developing and facilitating the engagement component (advising sessions).

Participate constructively in ITE’s ongoing strategic planning under the Executive Director and UB Head Counselor.

Assist with student tracking systems, attendance, and A‑G progress monitoring.

Participant Recruitment (30%)

Monitor and refine recruitment protocols for assigned school sites.

Recruit students per program protocol and eligibility standards; screen applications and conduct intake interviews.

Conduct regular contacts with potential students and parents to complete applications.

Academic Advising (45%)

Provide advising services at sites, online, and where appropriate, including academic advice, career planning, study skills, and motivational counseling.

Conduct needs assessment and develop Individual Learning Plans (ILPs).

Check students’ A‑G progress and advise on college admissions and financial aid.

Document all student contacts and services using designated sheets and forms.

Provide support with financial award letters and scholarships.

Six‑Week Summer Academy (5% AY, 100% Summer)

Support recruitment and screening of student participants and assist with Summer Academy recruitment presentations.

Assist in interview process for summer academy staff.

Transition to Residential Advisor role, live on campus with 10‑12 students, attend mandatory RA trainings, and lead a cohort.

Attend all program functions, staff meetings, and field experiences.

Other Duties (5%)

Perform additional duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Minimum Required Qualifications

Experience working with high‑school students.

One or more years as a youth leader, camp counselor, or equivalent.

Preferred Qualifications or Special Skills

Bachelor’s degree in education, counseling, psychology, or related field.

Four years of progressively successful experience in a similar role.

Two years of advising/mentoring high‑school students.

Experience coordinating events for groups.

Knowledge of TRIO programs and regulations or similar outreach programs.

Additional Applicant Information

Candidate must reside in California and live within a commutable distance from SDSU at time of hire.
