Position Overview CMS Energy is seeking a highly skilled
Senior Civil Engineer (Engineer III)
to lead civil engineering activities for natural gas capital projects involving distribution, transmission, city gate/regulator stations, compression facilities, and storage operations. This role is part of the Civil Engineering Group and supports a portfolio of capital upgrade projects within a multidisciplinary project environment.
The Senior Civil Engineer will work closely with project engineers, project managers, operations personnel, and other stakeholders throughout all project phases. The role requires strong technical expertise, effective communication, and the ability to manage multiple concurrent projects.
Key Responsibilities
Define and scope the civil engineering design and construction requirements for assigned projects.
Develop and manage engineering service contracts to complete required design work.
Provide engineering oversight, technical reviews, and subject matter expertise throughout project execution.
Support project managers in procuring construction services and ensuring alignment with engineering requirements.
Lead and contribute to project closeout activities, including record drawings, test documentation, and verification of completed work.
Deliver regular project updates to leadership regarding scope, quality, cost, schedule, and risk.
Conduct frequent site visits (average 3 days/week; up to 5 days/week) for activities including pre-engineering review, bid walkdowns, construction milestones, inspections, and redline walkthroughs.
Work effectively in industrial environments, including areas that may be loud, hot, oily, or require navigation of rough terrain, ladders, platforms, or confined spaces.
Technical Qualifications
Working knowledge of civil engineering design principles, including:
Site layout and grading
Stormwater management
Foundation and structural design
Pre-engineered metal buildings
Storage tank design
Environmental permitting (wetlands, soil erosion, culverts, etc.)
Experience preparing and managing engineering drawings, technical specifications, and contract documents for consulting and construction services.
Familiarity with relevant Civil/Structural codes and standards, including:
IBC/MBC
AISC Steel Construction Manual
ACI 318
AWS D1.1
ASCE 7
Personal Skills
Strong commitment to safety and safe work practices.
Ability to work independently and within multidisciplinary teams.
Effective communication of project status, challenges, and risks.
Strong engineering judgment, leadership, and problem-solving skills.
Education & Certifications
Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering from an ABET-accredited university (required).
