This Opportunity WSP is seeking a

Junior Operations & Modeling Rail Planner/Analyst

to join our

Transit and Rail Operations team . Positions are available in

Atlanta, GA; New York, NY; Los Angeles, CA; Seattle, WA

and other WSP offices. Remote locations will be considered.

Job Description Our team delivers comprehensive rail operations, service planning, and analysis across light rail, heavy/rapid transit, commuter rail, intercity passenger rail, high‑speed rail, and freight rail. With deep expertise in rail operations and simulation, we support clients across North America in making informed operating and capital investment decisions.

We are looking for candidates with a strong analytical background, an interest in rail operations and service planning, and the interpersonal skills to thrive in a client‑focused consulting environment.

Your Impact

Conduct rail service planning and simulation modeling in collaboration with project teams.

Apply technical knowledge to evaluate project designs and service plans across diverse rail modes.

Collect, process, and analyze rail infrastructure and operations data to support modeling efforts.

Produce clear, compelling deliverables including technical reports, memos, maps, diagrams, dashboards, and visualizations.

Perform independent technical reviews and analyses to support capital projects, service planning, infrastructure development, and outage planning.

Research operational performance of rail networks, vehicles, and train control systems.

Present findings to clients and coordinate technical aspects with partners to ensure alignment with project scope.

Stay current with industry practices, regulatory requirements, and emerging technologies.

Collaborate with engineers, planners, regulators, academics, and government representatives on federally, state, and locally funded projects.

Uphold WSP’s Code of Conduct, ensuring ethical decision‑making and compliance with safety and integrity standards.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree (or higher) in Engineering, Planning, Policy, Computer Science, or related field; or equivalent experience.

0 to 1 years of relevant post‑education experience.

Familiarity with rail operations, operating rules, and practices.

Experience with—or ability to quickly learn—rail simulation and/or operations planning software.

Knowledge of rail systems, train control/signaling, vehicles, and operations.

Experience in data analytics and industry standard tools.

Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).

Strong communication skills, with the ability to convey technical concepts to varied audiences.

Demonstrated ability to manage multiple priorities, work independently, and contribute effectively in a team environment.

Critical thinking and problem‑solving skills, with the ability to synthesize data into actionable insights.

Commitment to workplace safety and adherence to WSP’s health, safety, and anti‑harassment policies.

Flexibility to work schedules aligned with project needs, including occasional travel.

Preferred Qualifications

Graduate degree in Engineering, Planning, Policy, or related field.

Professional credentials such as E.I.T / P.E (Professional Engineer), AICP (Certified Planner), or similar industry certification.

Professional experience in rail operations, transit, or transportation consulting.

Hands‑on experience with rail simulation or operations planning software (e.g., Viriato, OpenTrack, RTC, Railsys).

Proficiency in complementary tools such as GIS, CAD, R, Python, or Adobe Suite.

Compensation Expected Salary: $58,200 - $96,030 (U.S.)
