Position:
Principal Hardware Design Engineer
Location:
Detroit, MI
Salary Range:
$120,000.00–$140,000.00
Responsibilities / Key Areas:
End-to-End BMS Design:
Lead electrical design of automotive Battery Management Systems (BMS) covering high-voltage monitoring, cell balancing, protection circuits, and communication interfaces (CAN, LIN, SPI).
System Architecture & Documentation:
Define and document BMS electrical architecture aligned with vehicle requirements and safety goals.
Customer & Team Collaboration:
Work with internal and external stakeholders to define system and performance requirements.
Hardware Development:
Oversee hardware components including PCBs, microcontrollers, analog/digital circuits, and sensors. Create detailed schematics, select components, and collaborate with PCB layout teams.
Prototype & Testing:
Build and test hardware prototypes; ensure performance and safety compliance; iterate designs as needed.
Sensor & Monitoring Integration:
Develop circuits to measure voltage, current, temperature, state of charge, etc.
Safety Compliance:
Ensure designs meet ISO 26262, IEC 62133, and other relevant standards; perform safety analysis.
Cross-Functional Integration:
Collaborate with software, systems, and testing teams for overall energy storage system integration.
Documentation & Analysis:
Produce specifications, test plans, DFMEA, WCCA, and test reports.
Problem-Solving & Improvement:
Troubleshoot hardware issues, enhance performance, and adopt emerging technologies.
Leadership & Team Management:
Lead design teams, conduct technical reviews, coordinate with global/offshore teams, and mentor engineers.
Ideal Candidate Skills:
Strong
analog and digital circuit design , microcontrollers, and sensor integration experience.
Proficient in
PCB design tools
(Altium, Cadence) and simulation (SPICE).
Deep knowledge of
battery technologies , battery safety, and EV energy storage systems.
Familiarity with automotive regulations, safety standards, and system-level architecture.
Strong leadership, team collaboration, and project management skills.
Programming skills (C/C++) are a plus.
Experience with Li-Ion batteries, battery packs, ECUs, MEMS, and alternative energy systems.
