Summary The main function of a phlebotomist is to assist in performing various assigned duties, troubleshooting, training and making workflow recommendations.

Position Responsibilities

Experience doing blood draws, labeling specimens, centrifuging specimens, recording maintenance data and decontamination, updating patient information, etc.

Collects and stores specimens according to established procedures.

Properly explains in a clear but courteous manner the process of the venipuncture (blood drawing) or other specimen collection (e.g., urine or fecal) as required.

Demonstrate technique(s) using straight needles and/or butterfly needles.

Fully understand all of the physician's orders.

Matches laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes.

Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by test order.

Check all test requisitions or computer label against script to ensure 100% correct.

Package specimens for transport.

Store specimen samples according to required temperature, place in appropriate collection containers/tubes, accurately label, and follow different procedures as outlined by specific protocols necessary for transport to maintain integrity of the specimen.

Understand and comply with OSHA and DEP regulations.

Attend annual department trainings.

Answer telephone calls and read laboratory results to satisfy inquiries.

Minimum Qualifications

Valid phlebotomy certification for the state of employment as required.

Minimum of 6 months work experience performing venipunctures in a fast‑paced lab or hospital setting.

Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.

High School Diploma or GED (2–4 years of experience).

At least 1 year of phlebotomy experience (preferred in the southern part of Connecticut). Must be proficient in using both straight and butterfly needles.

Float and Shift Requirements

Available to cover any of the sites between 6 a.m. and 6 p.m.

Will not work continuously from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. but must be flexible to cover any of the sites during that timeframe for at least 8 hours.
