Lab Technician (Open)
Location: Islandia, NY (Plant)
Overview Airgas is hiring a Lab Technician to provide analytical and technical support for the production and certification of gas cylinders. This role is responsible for certifying candidate gas standards in compliance with customer requirements, regulatory directives, and Airgas’ Standard Operating Procedures.
Responsibilities
Perform cylinder analyses and ensure compliance with NIST, FDA, EPA, ISO, DOT, and SMS requirements.
Calculate gas mixtures to meet production tolerances and document results; perform flammable/oxidizer safety calculations.
Select appropriate cylinder and valve combinations to satisfy regulatory and mix compatibility requirements.
Analyze gas mixtures for composition, production, and analytical tolerances; evaluate discrepancies.
Operate control panels, valves, pressure gauges, and scales for accurate component measurement.
Blend a variety of components, including flammable, corrosive, toxic, and liquefiable gases.
Provide exceptional customer service by managing special product requests.
Support production laboratories through standard validation and intermediate analyses.
Complete thorough documentation of all production activities.
Assist with internal safety audits and maintain compliance with hazardous material handling procedures.
Maintain a positive work environment by participating in laboratory meetings and team activities.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
High school diploma or GED.
Minimum 1 year of related technical experience (or equivalent combination of education and experience).
Intermediate proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook).
Strong analytical skills and a methodical approach to improving production efficiency.
Mechanical aptitude.
Excellent oral and written communication skills.
Ability to work with diverse individuals.
Competency in reading Safety Data Sheets.
Flexible schedule to meet customer and management needs.
Mathematical competence (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, ratios, percentages).
Self‑motivated, organized, and able to work independently under pressure.
Attention to detail in handwritten compliance documentation.
Commitment to product quality and customer satisfaction.
Valid forklift driver’s license (safely drive forklift).
Capacity to lift and move materials up to 125 lbs with assistive equipment.
Preferred Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Science, Chemistry, or a related field.
Prior experience with compressed and welding gases, gas analysis, and gas laboratory equipment.
Experience utilizing SAP.
