Overview Vice President / Chief Human Resource Officer (CHRO) – The University of Colorado (CU) system, Denver, Colorado. The CHRO reports to the Senior Vice President of Internal Operations and Chief of Staff, sits on the President’s executive team, and partners with senior leaders across the CU System to develop and execute a mission‑centric people and culture strategy.

Responsibilities

Oversee approximately 130 employees across the system‑wide HR functions, including Associate Vice President positions and internal communications.

Serve as trusted advisor to the President, SVP for Internal Operations and Chief of Staff, executive leadership team, and campus CHROs on all talent, organizational, and workforce matters.

Ensure the System Administration talent strategy supports hiring, development, retention, and shared expectations across the system.

Collaborate with campus and system leaders to align HR strategies while respecting each entity’s unique needs.

Support key campus executives with coaching, conflict mediation, employee relations, and guidance on executive level searches.

Assist the Board of Regents on policy, employment practices, planning, and staff management matters.

Provide strategic oversight of all enterprise HR operations—payroll, benefits, retirement programs, leave management, HR technology, labor relations, policy development, and other centralized functions.

Lead enterprise‑wide alignment efforts for compensation, talent acquisition, leadership development, and culture initiatives.

Serve as trustee for the University of Colorado Health and Welfare Trust, ensuring health benefits strategy aligns with broader university goals.

Act as fiduciary leader for CU retirement plans and liaison to staff councils.

Collaborate with Legal Counsel on labor relations strategy, and support government relations on employee‑related legislation.

Professional Experience and Attributes

Demonstrated experience leading strategic HR transformation and culture change in large, complex organizations.

Ability to develop senior leaders and foster a culture of accountability, collaboration, and performance.

Expertise in workforce analytics, data‑driven decision‑making, and people metrics.

Deep understanding of modern HR principles, organizational effectiveness, and leadership development.

Collaborative and consultative leadership style with influence across multiple stakeholder groups.

Strong communication and relationship‑building skills, inspiring trust and driving alignment.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in business administration, human resources, law, public administration, or related field.

Ten (10) years of progressively responsible HR management experience in a large, complex organization.

Experience overseeing core HR functions such as payroll, benefits, retirement plans, HR technology systems, and leadership development.

Managing high‑volume service centers and shifting toward inclusive and supportive workplace culture.

Experience with labor relations policies and practices, including fiduciary responsibilities for benefit and retirement plans.

Demonstrated leadership of multi‑million‑dollar budgets and enterprise‑wide HR initiatives.

Preferred Qualifications

Advanced degree in a relevant field.

Experience leading culture transformation initiatives, including employee surveys and training programs.

Experience implementing compensation strategy and developing advancement and growth opportunities.

Prior assignment as CHRO.

Proven ability to influence change through collaborative and inclusive leadership.
