A leading electrical utility contractor is seeking a Senior Transmission Estimator with extensive experience preparing bids for large-scale overhead transmission projects. This role is ideal for a seasoned professional with strong technical knowledge of T-line construction methods, utility standards, and large bid strategy within the Ohio and Virginia markets.
About the Projects This position focuses on estimating major transmission line work, including:
High-voltage transmission lines (69kV–765kV)
Large-scale rebuilds, line hardening, and reconductoring projects
Greenfield overhead transmission line construction
Foundation, structure, and conductor installation packages
Utility-led capital improvement programs in OH and VA
Projects often include complex terrain, energized line considerations, environmental compliance, and multi-phased construction planning.
Key Responsibilities
Prepare detailed cost estimates for large overhead transmission projects—including labor, equipment, materials, and subcontractor work.
Review engineering drawings, plan & profile sheets, structure lists, and specifications to develop accurate quantities.
Evaluate construction methods, access requirements, foundation types, and equipment needs to establish accurate pricing.
Analyze vendor quotes and coordinate with suppliers to obtain competitive material pricing.
Identify risk factors, productivity assumptions, and value engineering opportunities.
Technical Collaboration
Coordinate with project managers, construction leadership, and engineering teams to validate cost assumptions.
Participate in site walks, constructability reviews, and pre-bid meetings.
Assist with schedule inputs, production rates, and resource planning for large project proposals.
Maintain historical cost data for transmission work and contribute to continuous estimating improvements.
Proposal Support & Client Interaction
Develop proposal packages, scope narratives, and bid clarifications.
Support RFP responses for utilities, cooperatives, and regional transmission organizations.
Ensure estimates are delivered on time and positioned competitively within the OH and VA markets.
Qualifications
10+ years of direct experience estimating transmission line projects (overhead preferred).
Strong knowledge of T-line construction methods, equipment requirements, and field practices.
Ability to interpret plan & profile drawings, one-lines, structure loading charts, and material specifications.
Experience with major utility standards in Ohio or Virginia is strongly preferred.
Proficiency with HeavyBid, Excel, or comparable estimating software.
Strong communication, analytical thinking, and organizational skills.
Experience working for a utility contractor, EPC firm, or power delivery company preferred.
