Job Summary
Position: Criminal Defense Attorney – Law Offices of the Public Defender (New Mexico)
Location: Alamogordo, New Mexico
Pay Information Additional hourly differential: $4.80 per hour ($9,984 annually).
Essential Functions
Public Defender 2 (PD2)
Handle a variety of misdemeanors and may assist in juvenile cases.
Assist higher level attorneys with complex cases.
Work under supervision of more experienced colleagues.
Conduct plea bargaining when appropriate.
Attend seminars, training, and review professional literature.
Draft, review, propose, and prepare reports and legal documents.
Public Defender 3 (PD3)
Represent clients in all misdemeanors or juvenile cases and low to medium level felonies with limited supervision.
Provide guidance and mentoring to lower level attorneys and clerks.
Work under guidance of higher level attorneys.
Conduct plea bargaining when appropriate.
Attend seminars, training, and review professional literature.
Draft, review, propose, and prepare reports and legal documents.
Public Defender 4 (PD4)
Handle felony cases such as burglaries, drug crimes, property crimes, and probation violations with limited supervision.
Handle more complex felony cases with guidance of higher level attorney.
Prepare appellate briefs and argue cases before the Court of Appeals and Supreme Court.
Provide guidance to lower level attorneys.
Work independently and resolve complex issues related to caseload.
Attend seminars, training, and review professional literature.
Draft, review, propose, and prepare reports and legal documents.
Perform related and other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
PD2: Current New Mexico attorney license or eligible for limited license.
PD3: Same as PD2 plus at least one year of experience as a practicing attorney.
PD4: Same as PD2 plus at least four years of experience as a practicing attorney.
Employment Requirements
Valid driver’s license.
Collective bargaining agreement applies.
