The Office of School Health (OSH) is a joint program of the New York City Department of Education and the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene. OSH promotes the health of the 1.3 million students enrolled in approximately 1,800 public and non‑public schools in New York City. Services to students include case management of chronic health problems, preventive health screening, urgent care, medication administration, preventive counseling, reproductive health services, health education, referral for care and assurance of ongoing effective treatment.

Duties

Monitoring all areas of staff development and training to ensure that the Bureau's goals are met.

Collaborating with central nursing leadership staff to ensure integration and alignment of training activities and resources, including the Borough Nursing Director for Contract Agency Nursing, the Diabetes Team Supervisors, and the OSH Nursing recruitment team.

Managing the budget for training, procurement, and educational materials for the Nursing Unit.

Designing and overseeing the implementation and coordination of the orientation and training program for newly hired nursing personnel.

Developing year‑start training and ongoing remediation efforts in close collaboration with regional nursing leadership, ensuring appropriate resources and materials are available for existing staff nurses.

Supervising a team of staff development coordinators, currently 3 Level III nursing supervisors and 1 Level II nursing supervisor, plus a staff development public health advisor admin.

Researching, developing, planning, coordinating and/or conducting in‑service staff development and training programs for nursing and ancillary staff.

Ensuring all DOE and DOHMH staff nurses have current CPR certification.

Consulting with partner agency offices and teams including the DOHMH Office of Quality Improvement, FCH Human Resources, DOE Office of Occupational Safety and Health, Language Access and other support teams, and participating in the development of a continuous quality improvement program consistent with agency standards.

Assisting with the development of nursing protocols and procedures.

Assessing the special education needs of nursing staff and formulating training plans.

Planning for, conducting, and instructing nursing staff in new procedures and/or job skills as needed.

Collecting, correcting, and analyzing statistical data.

Participating in special projects and initiatives and preparing management reports with recommendations for improvements.

Preferred Skills

Key knowledge, skills and abilities required to carry out the major duties and responsibilities of the position.

Experience managing professional staff; experience in program management and development.

Administrative experience in public health.

Strong knowledge of nursing skills.

Ability to develop and coordinate training programs for a diverse staff; ability to maintain effective working relationships with all levels of management.

Strong analytical, organizational, follow‑through and active listening skills.

Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both verbally and in writing.

Good computer skills using Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.

Knowledge of DOHMH and DOE personnel policies and procedures.

Minimum Qualifications

A valid New York State license as a Registered Nurse, a baccalaureate degree in Nursing from an accredited college and a master’s degree in Nursing, Public Health or a related field, plus four years of recent experience in public health or hospital nursing or a related field; at least 18 months of which must have been in an administrative, managerial, executive, consultative or educational capacity, or in supervision of professional public health nursing personnel working in any of the above mentioned areas.

Education and/or experience equivalent to the first requirement. All candidates must possess a valid New York State license as a Registered Nurse, a baccalaureate degree in Nursing from an accredited college, and the 18 months of specialized experience described above.
