University Police Officer (UPO) Inside Higher Ed is hiring for the University Police Officer (UPO) role at Georgetown University.

Job Overview The University Police Officer performs law enforcement functions on University property necessary to protect the life, well‑being, and property of students, faculty, staff, visitors, dignitaries, and others. Duties include policing, patrol, event security, investigation, use of access control systems, circulation and safety systems, effecting arrests, and emergency response as outlined in General Orders and Special Orders. The officer also provides information and assistance to the University community.

Work Interactions & Work Mode Designation Directly responsible to the Police Sergeant, the officer performs patrol functions, specialized assignments and works under general supervision. The position is considered essential under University Personnel policy guidelines and may require being on call. The officer must be willing to work extended, odd, or off hours to meet departmental expectations, including rotating tours (day, evening, overnight) with fluctuating days off.

Requirements and Qualifications

Education and Experience:

High School Diploma (or equivalent) required; College Degree preferred. Minimum 3 years of general work experience required; 1–3 years of security, law enforcement, or military experience preferred.

Citizenship and Age:

Must be a U.S. citizen and at least 21 years of age.

Driver’s License:

Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license with no violations in the last three years and be able to pass Georgetown University driver certification.

Background and Tests:

All applicants must pass a written test, a report writing test, drug test, physical examination, and extensive psychological testing. A comprehensive background investigation is required.

Commission and Training (Non‑Lateral Hires):

Must be eligible to obtain and maintain a Campus Special Police Officer Commission and complete all required university police training including certification in Arrest Control Tactics, Baton, and OC-based Aerosol Restraint. Training includes successful completion of the Consortium of Universities Law Enforcement Academy within the probation period.

Certification (Lateral Hires):

Must have current certification in Baton/OC Spray and successfully completed the Consortium of Universities Law Enforcement Academy or equivalent. Basic to intermediate knowledge of criminal and civil law and police policies and procedures is required.

Computer Skills:

Comfortable using computers including Microsoft Word, Excel, and email. Knowledge of telecommunications equipment is desirable. Administrative and clerical skills are a plus.

Personal Attributes:

Tact, patience, professional and courteous demeanor, pleasant personality, respecting police powers in a university environment. Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including report writing, are essential.
