General Summary of Position

Primary Duties and Responsibilities
Anticipates the sequential needs of the surgeon during the operative procedure.
Assists with case preparation following preference card guidelines.
Contributes to the achievement of established department goals and objectives and adheres to department policies, procedures, quality standards, and safety standards. Complies with governmental and accreditation regulations.
Ensures that equipment is functioning properly and immediately notifies appropriate personnel of any problems.
Functions as a surgical assistant during operative procedures, performing specified activities under the direct supervision of the surgeon. May act as second assistant by providing exposure and holding retractors.
Identifies and handles specimens appropriately.
Maintains aseptic techniques; actively monitors situations that could lead to breaches in aseptic technique.
May function as a technical resource person for OR staff, providing information relating to instruments and equipment.
Participates in multidisciplinary quality and service improvement teams.
Performs indirect patient‑care activities such as patient transportation as needed.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Provides comfort and support for pre‑operative patients by demonstrating sensitivity to patient care and privacy.
Responds to questions from patient families and significant others in a prompt, courteous, positive, and knowledgeable manner and/or refers to appropriate personnel.
Minimal Qualifications Education
High School Diploma or GED required.
Bachelor's degree from a school of surgical technology or completion of hospital‑based training required.
Experience
Less than 1 year 6 months experience as a surgical technologist or graduation from a school of surgical technology program required.
One year of relevant professional‑level work experience may be substituted for one year of required education.
Licenses and Certifications
CPR – Cardiac Pulmonary Resuscitation (includes BLS and NRP) for healthcare providers from either the American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross within 90 days required.
Additional unit/specialty certifications may vary by department or business unit.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Competency in case procedure preparation and completion in all services.
Verbal and written communication skills.
Basic computer skills preferred.
Position Salary Range USD $29.73 – $53.49 per hour.
