Summary Conducts routine procedures and tests using radiology equipment to acquire patient diagnostic data. Assists the radiologist in completion of intricate radiographic procedures, including preparation and administration of contrast media and medications in accordance with state and federal regulations. Performs patient assessments and provides patient care. Evaluates the appropriateness of examination and assesses the quality of radiographic images.
Responsibilities
Demonstrate a thorough knowledge of all aspects of General Diagnostic Radiology, adhere to Departmental Protocols and Policy and Procedures of UNC Healthcare System, obtain RT(R) credentials and maintain active status, and assist in troubleshooting work unit problems with respect to equipment and protocols.
Ensure that patient demographic, emulsion markers, and examination requested are correct, critique, orient and save all pertinent images, transmit QAed images to PACS, ensure that all images reach PACS, document completion or cancellation of all procedures in RIS, report any equipment problem to appropriate resources, and utilize PACS and HIS system for obtaining additional study data.
Conduct routine procedures and tests using radiology equipment to acquire patient diagnostic data.
Perform work in a timely manner, produce quality radiographic images consistently, analyze requests and draw appropriate conclusions for examination, review radiographic orders and images, and correlate patient demographic information.
Use RIS, CIS, PACS and SMS effectively to access information, document procedural status, modify orders, complete exam in the RIS system, QC’s and transmit information to PACS.
Verify patient identity, obtain patient history relevant to examination order, verify pregnancy status before administering ionizing radiation, assess patient condition, determine if additional medical personnel or equipment is needed, assist patients requiring extra attention, react to emergency situations, and ensure patient safety.
Other Information Education Requirements
Associate’s degree or completion of an accredited Radiologic Sciences Program. If degree is not yet complete, candidates may be selected contingent on completing a degree program within 90 days of hire.
Licensure/Certification Requirements
Registered by the American Registry of Radiological Sciences or registry eligible and become registered within one (1) year from date of hire. (Registry eligible candidates must provide a copy of diploma from accredited program.) Must maintain registry status and continuing education requirements annually.
Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Provider certification.
Professional Experience Requirements
No prior experience required.
Knowledge/Skills/and Abilities Requirements
Knowledge of radiation protection and safety in addition to general and electrical safety, infection control, TB and standard precautions.
