Handling multi‑state sales/use tax recovery projects for large, sophisticated organizations takes more than just a technical understanding of current sales and use tax rules. As a Sales and Use Tax Senior, assigned to EY’s Sales and Use Tax Lookback Review Center of Excellence (COE), you will build and apply your knowledge on a wide range of sales and use tax recovery projects for clients in multiple industries. The opportunity Our Sales and Use Tax Lookback Review COE is a national team that leads large multi‑state, sales and use tax recovery projects for EY’s largest clients. It’s here you’ll find everything you need to continue developing as a multi‑state, sales and use tax practitioner. It’s all about taking on new skills and responsibilities as they arise and making the most of our dedicated mentors and training programs.
Your key responsibilities There is no average day for a Sales and Use Tax Senior in the COE – you’ll likely spend time on a diverse array of projects, responsibilities and tasks. Whatever you’re working on, our clients will turn to you for up‑to‑the‑minute tax advice they can always rely on. To make that happen, you’ll work in a highly collaborative culture where listening to and sharing information with colleagues is essential.
Skills and attributes for success
Researching clients’ business operations and building long‑lasting relationships
Identifying applicable sales and use tax exemptions and exclusions
Identifying potential over‑payment opportunities or risks and communicating these to clients
Monitoring current tax law changes, to maintain credibility as a trusted advisor
Developing clear, intelligent plans and approaches for sales and use tax recoveries
Preparing and defending sales and use tax refund claims
Participating on a motivated team of professionals
Supervising a motivated team of professionals, guaranteeing they have the skills, knowledge and opportunities to reach their full potential
To qualify for the role
A bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business or a related discipline
Professional knowledge in a broad range of sales and use tax processes, concepts and tools
A proven record of excellence in a professional services or tax organization
Technical writing and research experience in a tax context
The ability to prioritize when working on multiple complex projects
Strong influencing skills, and the confidence to question existing processes
Willingness to travel as needed, and working in a balanced hybrid environment
Ideally, you’ll also have
An achieved or partially achieved CPA qualification, certification as a member of the Institute for Professionals in Taxation, CMI designation, or the ability to sit for a state bar

You will receive a comprehensive compensation and benefits package, with a base salary range for this role in the U.S. ranging from $81,700 to $135,000, with higher ranges for specific metro areas ($98,100–$153,500). Additional total rewards include medical and dental coverage, pension and 401(k) plans, and a wide range of paid time‑off options.
Our expectation is for most people in external, client‑serving roles to work together in person 40–60 % of the time over the course of an engagement, project or year.
Under our flexible vacation policy you’ll decide how much vacation time you need based on your own personal circumstances, and you’ll also be granted time off for designated EY paid holidays, winter/summer breaks, personal/family care and other leaves of absence.
