Clinical Instructor (RN) – Heart and Kidney Unit (250002OM)
3E-Heart and Kidney Unit (HKU) is a 20‑bed unit focused on family‑centered care for children with cardiac and renal diseases. Patients range in age from neonates through adults and may be receiving care for heart surgery, diagnostic or interventional cardiac catheterizations, dialysis, acute or chronic renal failure, nephrotic or nephritic disorders, or organ transplantation. All patient beds have cardiac and respiratory monitoring. The HKU primarily admits patients from the Cardiac Intensive Care Unit, Ambulatory Clinic, PACU, EMTC, and 23‑hour cardiac and renal cases.
All nursing practice is based on the legal scope of practice, national and specialty nursing standards, CNMC Policies and Procedures, and applicable laws and regulations. The Professional Model of Care requires registered nurses to be responsible and accountable for their own practice, supporting the development of RN relationships within the community, especially those associated with health and well‑being of the community at large. The Clinical Instructor directs, oversees, and maintains responsibility for clinical orientation of nursing clinical fellows, provides hands‑on direct care and teaching, and directly supervises their activities.
Qualifications
Minimum Education : BSN (Required)
Minimum Work Experience : 5 years nursing experience required; experience with pediatric care preferred.
Functional Accountabilities
Discuss each orientee’s role expectations and the Clinical Instructor’s responsibilities.
Act as specialist in orientation and ongoing education.
Review individual orientee learning needs and develop individualized education plans.
Communicate orientation outcomes to all involved.
Use adult learning principles to facilitate education.
Participate in competency training for the unit.
Address patient and family educational needs with orientees.
Education
Discuss each orientee’s role expectations.
Specialist in orientation and ongoing education.
Develop individualized education plans and communicate outcomes.
Apply adult learning principles.
Participate in competency training.
Identify patient and family educational needs.
Clinical Instruction
Provide direct patient care independently or as a preceptor.
Identify weekly clinical experience goals with orientees in collaboration with the manager and specialists; plan assignments according to didactic sequence and individual needs.
Plan patient care assignments a day ahead, remain flexible, and communicate changes.
Use individual and dual assignments to structure learning experiences.
Develop follow‑up activities post patient care experience.
Arrange additional clinical experience in clinics, ORs, cath lab, etc., as appropriate.
Patient Care Instruction
Plan patient and family education with orientees and staff.
Plan patient and family discharge needs with relevant team members.
Prepare orientees by reviewing patient diagnosis and management plan, pathophysiology, medications, and relevant diagnostics.
Help orientees organize priorities and role‑play scenarios to develop critical thinking.
Facilitate post‑clinical conferences and document competency achievements.
Teach content in didactic and lab settings; model professional behavior.
Provide direct care with orientees, teaching patients and families, and implementing discharge activities.
Safety
Speak up when unsafe behavior is observed.
Continuously validate information for decision making and documentation.
Pause to address uncertainty and resolve the situation.
Demonstrate accurate, clear, and timely verbal and written communication.
Promote safety for patients, families, visitors, and coworkers.
Pay attention to details, practicing Stop‑Think‑Act‑Review to self‑check behavior.
