This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP) – a student loan payment reimbursement program. Eligible applicants must meet specific eligibility requirements per VHA policy and submit their EDRP application within four months of appointment. Program approval and award amount (up to $200,000) and eligibility period (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services office after review of the application. Former EDRP participants are ineligible to apply.

Qualifications Basic Requirements

United States citizenship; non‑citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens as per VA policy.

Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) from a school approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year the degree was completed.

Current full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a U.S. State, Territory, Commonwealth, or the District of Columbia.

Completion of residency training approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty program leading to eligibility for board certification.

Proficiency in spoken and written English.

Physical requirements as referenced in VA Handbook 5019.

Additional requirement: Board certification is generally not required for employment in VA, but may be required in three circumstances: (1) supervisory positions for medical students or residents; (2) faculty status with an affiliated medical school; or (3) specific VHA policy requiring board certification.

Duties

Provides psychiatric and addiction medicine care to a vulnerable population of veterans receiving residential‑level treatment in the Domiciliary (DOM).

Role is within the Veteran Affairs Recovery Center (VARC) section and Residential Rehabilitation Treatment Program (RRTP).

Responsible for overall care of patients with psychiatric disorders, performing full psycho‑diagnostic services, including assessment, psychotherapeutic techniques, and appropriate treatment decisions.

Ensures appropriate referrals to specialty programs and community resources.

Participates in team meetings, treatment planning conferences, and collaborates with multidisciplinary team members to coordinate comprehensive patient care.

Orders diagnostic tests and consultations, differentiates between normal and abnormal findings, and makes appropriate treatment decisions.

Coordinates treatment with family members, guardians, care facilities, and other providers such as prescribers, nurses, therapists, social workers, and case managers.

May diagnose and treat medical diseases consistent with general medical education and training.

Participates in supervision and teaching in support of the psychiatric residency program and performs on‑call duties.

Work schedule: Monday – Friday, 8:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.
