Job Description
The Iowa Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), Division of State‑Operated Specialty Care, Bureau of Independence Mental Health Institute (IMHI) is seeking a Psychiatrist to join our team. This is a full‑time position with opportunities for growth and development.
Primary Responsibilities
Direct patient care on one of the three inpatient psychiatric units with an average caseload of 10-15 patients. The Psychiatrist can practice both psychotherapy and medication management without restrictions.
Actively participate as a member of the interdisciplinary treatment team in collaboration with medical, nursing, psychological, social work, and other health specialties. The Psychiatrist is the clinical leader of this interdisciplinary team of highly skilled professionals.
Provide advanced clinical practice to individuals, groups, and families; conduct ongoing assessment including health and developmental history, psychosocial history, physical examination, and diagnostic tests.
Review, evaluate, and document patient response to care; assess patient medical/nursing/educational needs and provide both formal and informal teaching; effectively involve patient, family, and significant others in plan of care.
Work collaboratively with administrative, medical, and other clinical departments to expand and implement evidence‑based modalities of care including Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) skills and trauma‑responsive care.
Provide preceptor work with medical students, psychiatry residents, and psychiatry fellows who train at IMHI through the State’s public‑sector psychiatry residency/fellowship program delivered with the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. This includes collaboration with UIHC and HHS Central Office to expand and refine education and training opportunities to develop the pipeline of public‑sector psychiatrists in Iowa.
Adjunct faculty appointment with UIHC may be available if interested. Adjunct faculty appointment would include access to numerous virtual learning opportunities including grand rounds, faculty development, free CME, and online access to numerous clinical databases and electronic books.
Fulfill a 40‑hour per week position with on‑call responsibilities. On‑call responsibilities are required and receive additional compensation.
