Professional Practice Specialist (RN) - Dialysis (250002UN)

Job Summary The Professional Practice Specialist (PPS) supports both the acute and chronic dialysis programs at Children’s National Hospital. This role serves as a clinical expert, providing leadership in practice development, education, quality improvement, and regulatory compliance. The PPS collaborates with nursing, medical, and administrative teams to ensure safe, evidence‑based dialysis care and optimal patient outcomes.

Location District of Columbia-Washington. CN Hospital (Main Campus) 111 Michigan Avenue NW Washington 20010.

Shift & Schedule Shift: Day. Work Schedule: Monday – Friday.

Responsibilities

Participate/support Shared Leadership and contribute to CNMC’s Magnet Journey.

Ensure nursing practice is based on evidence of best practice.

Accountable for participating in the Division of Nursing’s Performance Improvement process at division or unit level.

Participate in community activities and clinical pathway development.

Maintain an interdisciplinary plan of care with measurable outcomes.

Provide clinical consultation across inpatient and outpatient dialysis services.

Facilitate staff learning the concepts and theories of quality improvement and their participation in the quality improvement process.

Conduct programs relative to area of specialty for other departments as necessary.

Speak up when team members exhibit unsafe behavior or performance and promote safety for patients, families, visitors and co‑workers.

Qualifications Minimum Education Bachelor’s degree in nursing (BSN) – Required Master’s degree – Preferred

Minimum Work Experience 5 years nursing experience – Required 2 years experience in area of specialty – Preferred

Education & Professional Development

Continuous assessment of assigned staff educational needs.

Develop educational plans meeting organizational and departmental goals.

Coordinate service/unit/individual orientation and basic orientation in specialty area.

Provide continuing education for clinical staff and assess competency.

Facilitate CNMC sponsored lectures and conferences and use teaching methods for adult learners.

Clinical Expertise

Maintain clinical expertise by providing direct patient care.

Facilitate problem solving of clinical care issues and participate in patient care rounds and conferences.

Identify complex care requirements to the care team.

Participate in clinical pathway development and establish, implement, communicate and evaluate interdisciplinary plan of care.

Quality / Research / Innovation

Support Division of Nursing’s Performance Improvement process.

Identify opportunities for improvement and direct clinical quality improvement efforts.

Facilitate staff learning of quality improvement concepts and their participation.

Participate in creation of new knowledge and facilitate research into practice.

Consultant & Safety

Act as a resource to affiliated organizations on behalf of CNMC.

Speak up when team members exhibit unsafe behavior or performance.

Continuously validate and verify information needed for decision making or documentation.

Stop in the face of uncertainty to resolve the situation.

Demonstrate accurate, clear and timely verbal and written communication.
