Job Description

The state supported living centers serve people with intellectual and developmental disabilities who are medically fragile or have behavioral problems. This role involves advanced psychiatric assessment, treatment, and collaboration with the interdisciplinary team (IDT) to provide individualized care for SSLC residents.

Responsibilities

Key duties include:

  • Conduct psychiatric activities, monitoring trends, diagnosing, and treating SSLC residents.
  • Administer specialized psychiatric treatments, assessments, and procedures.
  • Review and analyze system data to ensure individualized treatment plans and implement changes with the IDT.
  • Provide consultation or training to behavioral health and direct care staff on treatment plans and interventions.
  • Attend weekly/monthly meetings, lead discussions, and promote buy‑in for necessary changes.
  • Participate in Peer Review Committees and other clinically related committees as requested.
  • Plan, assign, and guide multidisciplinary resident care and may supervise other staff depending on SSLC structure.
  • Work under minimal supervision with extensive latitude for initiative and independent judgment.

Essential Job Functions (EJFs)

Additional duties include: attending work on a regular basis, potentially working rotating schedules, extended shift or overtime; serving on-call status as required; utilizing a multidisciplinary approach for psychiatric assessments and treatments; attending medication reviews; developing and implementing psychiatric treatment plans; ensuring collaboration with neurology and other psychiatrists; managing acute psychiatric care; reviewing system data and presenting changes; maintaining open communication with the Lead Psychiatrist and Medical Director; participating in mandatory training and various committees; leading or managing staff within the psychiatric department; and performing additional duties such as disaster response or COOP activation.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs)

  • Expertise in general medicine and general psychiatry, practice of individualized care.
  • Understanding of behavior treatment principles; ability to collaborate with behavioral health staff.
  • Knowledge of state formulary guidelines and documentation of exceptions for maximum doses.
  • Experience providing services to people with intellectual and developmental disabilities in a residential setting.
  • Skill in using psychiatric diagnostic tools and conducting research.
  • Proficiency with electronic health records and Microsoft Office.
  • Ability to assess, diagnose, prescribe, and supervise treatment; develop policies and procedures.
  • Problem‑solving for complex medical issues and consultation with literature.
  • Facilitate unified team approach with the IDT to assure quality care.
  • Implement quality improvement initiatives and manage polypharmacy.
  • Supervise or assign work to others as required.
  • Work independently using good judgment and time‑management skills.
  • Participate in annual training; present information effectively in oral and written form.

Licensure, Registration, and Certification

  • Unrestricted medical doctor license in Texas.
  • Board certified or board eligible in Psychiatry in Texas.
  • Current unrestricted DEA registration certificate.
  • National Provider Identifier (NPI#); enrollment as Medicaid and Medicare Part B provider.

Initial Screening Criteria

  • Residency trained.
  • At least three years of experience working as a psychiatrist (preferred).
  • Experience working with people with mental illness and intellectual disabilities (preferred).

Additional Information

  • Applicants must pass a fingerprint criminal background check, pre‑employment drug screen, and registry checks.
