Role Overview:
This Senior Assistant Attorney General is located in the Consumer Protection Division in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, working within the Multistate and Privacy Bureau. Approximately 60% of the role focuses on multistate issues and 40% on privacy issues.
Position Summary:
The Senior AAG will conduct litigation of privacy, consumer protection, and multistate cases in state and federal courts, including drafting pleadings, motions, memoranda of law, and briefs. The role includes case development, investigations, settlements, and negotiations of injunctive and monetary relief.
Responsibilities:
Represent the Office of the Attorney General in court and administrative proceedings related to enforcement of state and federal consumer protection laws, including Chapter 501 of the Florida Statutes.
Participate in and oversee investigations of potential consumer protection violations, identify relevant legal issues, oversee evidence gathering, and prepare cases for resolution or legal proceedings.
Conduct litigation in state and federal courts, prepare pleadings, motions, briefs, subpoenas, discovery, and engage in pretrial and trial work. Attend trials, hearings, and appellate oral arguments.
Negotiate litigation resolutions and draft assurance of voluntary compliance, consent judgments, and mediated resolutions.
Collaborate with other states through the National Association of Attorneys General (NAAG) for multistate investigations and litigation.
Conduct legal research and assist in reviewing proposed legislation.
Respond to correspondence and inquiries regarding consumer protection issues.
Represent the Department in meetings and conferences, liaise with local, state, and federal law enforcement, and serve on task forces.
Perform administrative functions such as supervising secretaries, paralegals, and interns, attend staff meetings, maintain case progress, and prepare reports.
Assist and advise attorneys on trial practice, pleading, and procedures.
Maintain current expertise in relevant legal areas through continuing education and professional development.
Perform other assigned duties as needed, which may require extended hours or travel.
Qualifications:
Admission to the Florida Bar and six (6) years of professional experience in the practice of law, legal research, teaching law, or administrative/judicial hearings.
Real practice experience in a U.S. state or territory. Membership in good standing in another state bar may substitute for Florida admission if the attorney obtains Florida admission within 12 months of appointment.
Preferred Qualifications:
5 or more years of civil litigation experience
Extensive pretrial and discovery experience
5 or more years of consumer protection law experience
Extensive experience prosecuting or defending fraud, deceptive and unfair practices
CIPP/US certification
