Departmental Overview The Disabled Students’ Program promotes an inclusive environment for students with disabilities. We provide accommodations and services to help disabled students achieve their academic goals and collaborate to remove barriers to access.
Position Summary CART captioning is a legally mandated accommodation for deaf and hard‑of‑hearing students. This position provides real‑time captioning services during the instructional period (mid‑August to mid‑May). CART captionists use their own captioning software and steno machine, and must be available onsite throughout the semester, with some evening or weekend work as needed.

Responsibilities
Utilize a stenographic machine and captioning software to provide real‑time, word‑for‑word transcriptions of spoken English.
Maintain a translation rate of at least 200 words per minute with 98.5% accuracy.
Use captioning software features, maintain dictionaries, organize files, and convert files to RTF/PDF.
Prepare for assignments by reviewing relevant course materials and updating the captioning dictionary.
Communicate with the Communication Services Coordinator, faculty, staff, and students, and coordinate coverage when the coordinator is absent.
Use common office software, email, and calendaring; upload and distribute transcripts via AIM, Box, or other storage platforms.
Set up and break down equipment as needed.
Exercise sound judgment, maintain confidentiality, and follow UC Berkeley policies.
Attend meetings, training sessions, and special projects as requested.
Admin Duties
Collaborate on training modules and resources.
Work on DSP event committees.
Respond to inquiries on the unit’s shared email.
Attend workshops and seminars on higher education and disability.
Provide input for website and other unit materials.
Assist Captioned Media as assigned by the Communication Services Supervisor.
Required Qualifications
Demonstrated understanding of communication needs of deaf or hard‑of‑hearing consumers.
Working knowledge of vocabulary and terminology common in a university environment.
Knowledge of specialized vocabulary and techniques used in professional and technical subjects.
Understanding of student and classroom needs in a university setting.
Excellent communication skills to interact positively with a multicultural campus community.
Proficient with Microsoft Office, email platforms, and electronic calendaring.
Provide real‑time captioning at a minimum of 200 words per minute with at least 98.5% accuracy.
Proficient using steno software (e.g., Stenocat, Case Catalyst, Eclipse) and own captioning equipment.
Maintain a personal captioning dictionary of at least 60,000 entries.
Available to work on campus and complete all assignments onsite.
Adapt to changes in workload and priorities, willing to take on new assignments.
Capable of extended sitting, lifting up to 20 pounds, and performing other physical requirements.
Bachelor’s degree in a related area or equivalent experience.
Preferred Qualifications
5+ years CART captioning experience in higher education.
State of California Certified Shorthand Reporter (CSR) license.
Certified Realtime Captioner (CRR) or Registered Professional Reporter (RPR) through NCRA.
Completion of training from an NCRA recognized institution.
Salary & Benefits Under California law, the University of California, Berkeley is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role. The budgeted hourly rate is $86.87 (Step 1). This is a non‑exempt, biweekly‑paid position. Pay includes hours for preparation and editing.
