Project, Portfolio, & Systems Management Lead (PPSM Lead) is a key senior leadership role within the Zoetis global devices R&D segment. This position leads multiple teams of systems engineers, project managers, and project team leads and is responsible for the strategic planning and management of the global devices' portfolio of projects. The PPSM Lead is a vital strategic leader and influencer within the global devices engineering leadership team that provides the strategic direction and management for the entire global devices segment. This position shapes and influences enterprise-wide initiatives and long-term business strategy.
The role will enable project teams to successfully achieve company objectives including meeting or exceeding project requirements while adhering to schedule and cost targets. The PPSM Lead has an excellent understanding of engineering and scientific principles and processes applied in a new product development environment enabling them to help facilitate suitable project decisions and be able to appropriately prioritize work within the project portfolio. In addition to providing leadership within the global devices segment, the role also requires outstanding interpersonal skills to communicate with all levels throughout Zoetis, including executive leadership and external stakeholders. This communication includes describing highly technical information to non‑technical individuals as well as logically providing strategic rationale for a particular action.
Position Responsibilities
Leads multiple teams of systems engineers, project managers, and project team leads that oversee several new product development projects from design concepts to full manufacturing introduction.
Lead a team of system engineers that establish new product concepts and system level requirements in addition to providing technical leadership and influence throughout the project.
Oversee the global devices project portfolio including working with the commercial teams on prioritization, ensuring projects are executed via approved processes and plans, and administering resource planning activities to secure resource availability to realize the portfolio.
Organize and monitor the global devices department budget.
Oversee the development of portfolio project budgets, schedules, and risks. Ensure project plans are accurately represented and regularly updated in the Zoetis Enterprise Resource Planning system (EPM).
Champion the use of the global devices stage‑gate process for new product development including ensuring all required deliverables are completed according to plans and that the stage‑gate decision material is properly prepared.
Drive organizational change and continuous improvement at scale.
Contribute and participate as a member of the global devices engineering leadership team that provides strategic direction and management for the entire global devices' organization. Communicate insights into potential project risks, delays, or budget overruns to the team for discussion and resolution.
Establish and maintain relationships with key project stakeholders both inside and outside of global devices to ensure alignment and support for project objectives.
Account for high‑impact decisions affecting portfolio, resources, and business outcomes. Responsible for executive‑level presentations and recommendations to senior leadership.
Education and Experience
Bachelor of Science in an Engineering or Scientific Discipline (Masters Preferred) with 20+ years of increasing responsibility in engineering and project management, including significant experience at Director and above.
Extensive track record successfully delivering hardware and software‑intensive products in high technology industries.
Experience to include managing a project management office (PMO) including establishing and using best project management practices and standards.
Demonstrated experience leading cross functional project teams in a matrix environment and using a stage‑gate product life cycle management process. Preference is for new product development experience directing engineering teams with hardware, biological and software components.
Demonstrated technical knowledge and experience as part of a design or test team developing electromechanical systems.
Technical Skills Requirements
Demonstrated experience leading the development and implementation of robotics and automation solutions within the life sciences and/or healthcare industry, including integration of hardware and software systems for laboratory, manufacturing, or diagnostic applications.
Knowledge and technical experience of sufficient depth and breadth to understand project dynamics and successfully communicate with and guide multidisciplined highly technical teams.
Strong interpersonal and management skills, with the ability to lead and mentor team members, and to develop future leaders.
Ability to influence senior leaders in the organization and produce well‑thought‑out and complete decision material.
Capable of aligning project efforts with broader business goals and to connect these goals to the long‑term success of Zoetis.
Forward thinking team player who can challenge the team to think outside of the box.
Creative problem solver with ability to execute ideas and stay focused on the end goal.
Flexible and adaptive; able to explore many ideas simultaneously.
