About The Department The City of San José is one of the nation's best–managed cities. The Public Works Department (PWD) delivers capital improvement projects, maintains city facilities, and provides animal care and services.
Position Duties San Jose Animal Care Services, a division in the Public Works Department, is currently seeking a full‑time Animal Shelter Coordinator, Foster.
Salary range: $34.32 – $41.77 per hour.
The position provides humane handling and care for animals at the Animal Care Center and in foster homes. Responsibilities include building relationships with foster volunteers, coordinating placements, tracking and following up on animals in foster care, and managing logistics.
This position will undergo 4–6 weeks of training and may require weekend, holiday, rotating shifts, and emergency responses.
Key Responsibilities
Establish and maintain connections with foster volunteers and networks.
Maintain organized, accessible lists of volunteers and placements.
Identify animals suitable for fostering.
Communicate regularly with volunteers and ACS staff about animal status.
Oversee foster program and provide resources and guidance.
Promote ACS foster programs through the Public Information Manager.
Monitor animals for illness or injury, administer first aid, and coordinate veterinary care.
Conduct behavior evaluations as needed.
Humanely euthanize and dispose of animals when necessary.
Lead shelter entry‑level personnel, schedule, inspect work, and train staff and volunteers.
Perform administrative duties: maintain records, generate reports, and manage inventories.
Use proper control techniques for animals entering the shelter.
Minimum Qualifications Education High School Diploma
Experience One year of experience similar to an Animal Services Officer or Animal Care Attendant with the City of San José, or two years in the care and handling of animals in a public or private facility.
Certifications
Valid California Driver’s License
Incumbents must obtain euthanasia certification within one year of employment.
Other Qualifications Job Expertise Knowledge of professional and technical principles, citywide and departmental procedures, federal and state regulations. Desired experience: foster program, veterinary technician certification, euthanasia certification, vaccinations, animal disease recognition, temperament evaluation.
Supervision Set goals, establish priorities, provide support, empower others, and assign decisions appropriately.
Customer Service Anticipate customer needs and deliver services effectively using a professional demeanor.
Multi‑Tasking Handle multiple projects simultaneously.
Reliability Complete work in a timely and efficient manner while maintaining confidentiality.
Teamwork & Interpersonal Skills Develop effective relationships with co‑workers and supervisors.
Computer Skills Proficient with MS Office; Chameleon experience a plus.
Communication Skills Convey information clearly orally and in writing; effective listening.
Selection Process Evaluation based on training, experience, and responses to job‑specific questions. Qualified candidates will be invited to interview.
