The Opportunity

Black & Veatch is seeking a strategic technology leader to drive enterprise architecture across the organization. This role ensures our systems, platforms, and data are aligned with business goals, scalable for growth, and secure by design. You’ll lead a high‑performing team of enterprise, business, and solution architects, shape our technology roadmap, and guide major transformation initiatives. The position is based in either Cary, NC or Overland Park, KS and reports directly to the SVP of Architecture, Cloud, and Resilience.

Key Responsibilities

Leadership & Strategy

  • Develop and lead the enterprise architecture strategy aligned with business goals and technology vision.
  • Build and mentor a high‑performing team of architects across enterprise, business, and solution domains.
  • Communicate the EA charter, value proposition, and roadmap to stakeholders across business and IT.
  • Foster cross‑functional collaboration and alignment with product, infrastructure, cybersecurity, and data teams.
  • Stay current with emerging technologies and assess their relevance to business strategy.

Architecture Governance & Planning

  • Establish and lead architecture governance processes, including principles, standards, and decision frameworks.
  • Define and track KPIs to measure EA effectiveness and business impact.
  • Ensure architectural decisions support scalability, interoperability, and security.

Technology Modernization & Innovation

  • Lead modernization efforts to reduce technical debt, rationalize the portfolio, and enable innovation.
  • Conduct scenario planning and trend analysis to guide technology investments.
  • Run technology experiments and integrate successful innovations into operations.
  • Provide reference architecture and guardrails to support agile delivery and safe experimentation.

Business Alignment & Value Delivery

  • Translate business needs into architectural solutions that drive measurable outcomes.
  • Lead business capability mapping and ensure alignment of IT investments with strategic priorities.
  • Engage stakeholders to evaluate cost‑benefit profiles of architecture initiatives.

Communication & Change Enablement

  • Present architectural strategies, risks, and options to executive leadership.
  • Support change management efforts to drive adoption of EA standards and modernization initiatives.
  • Provide training and guidance on architecture best practices.

Management Responsibilities

Supervises work of others. Responsible for hiring, discipline, and pay administration of their subordinates.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Master’s or bachelor’s degree in computer science, Information Technology, or related field.
  • 12–15+ years relevant experience.
  • All applicants must complete pre‑employment onboarding requirements, including criminal/civil background check, drug screen, and motor vehicle records search, in compliance with applicable laws.

Preferred Qualifications

  • 18+ years of relevant experience, including 3+ years in a direct leadership role.
  • Senior‑level expertise across technology domains: applications, data, cloud, infrastructure and security.
  • Depth of expertise in modern architecture and methodologies.
  • Excellent leadership, communication, and stakeholder management skills.
  • Effective written and verbal communication, with the ability to simplify complex systems.
  • Knowledge of business models, operating models, financial models, cost‑benefit and trade‑off analysis, budgeting, and risk management.
  • Understanding of existing, new and emerging technologies, such as generative AI and its applications.
  • Knowledge of all components of an EA function, business and IT principles, and processes.
  • Familiarity with EA tools, graphical modeling approaches and repository management.
  • Strong leadership skills, along with exceptional soft and interpersonal skills, including teamwork, facilitation and negotiation.
  • Vendor‑ and technology‑neutral, focused on achieving targeted business outcomes over personal preferences or those of other business and IT leaders.
  • Practical in approach to problem solving and decision making.

Work Environment / Physical Demands

  • Hybrid or flexible work options may be offered after the first 90 days of employment based on manager discretion, job performance and work assignments.
  • Typical office environment, including sitting, walking, talking, hearing, reading, writing, keyboarding, driving, filing, reaching, stooping, crouching, bending, standing for extended periods of time, lifting or carrying up to 40 pounds.

Salary Plan

Information Technology Service (ITS) – Salary grade 020.
