Principal Solution Architect Hiring Department: Dell Medical School

Job Details The Office of Information Technology at the Dell Medical School is seeking a Principal Solution Architect. Under the direction of the CTO, this strategic leader will drive solution architecture, design, and implementation of platforms and capabilities for the new Academic Medical Center. The role spans education, research, clinical, administrative, digital, IT transformation, and hospital build. Key projects include multi‑year EHR, ERP, Digital, and IT transformation programs.

The Principal Solution Architect will work closely with technology leadership, research, and clinical teams, collaborate with UT Austin main campus IT, the UT System, and other healthcare organizations across the UT Health network. Occasional travel to other UT locations is expected.

Core deliverables include architecture principles, technology roadmaps, a complete solution catalog, solution design standards, and executive‑level presentation materials. The role supports a 5‑year transformation timeline.

Purpose: Lead requirements development, technology portfolio cataloging, translate business needs into technical solutions, deliver global and local solution designs, and oversee project execution.

Responsibilities

Deep understanding of leading technologies and how they integrate in healthcare, assessing usability, performance, reliability, cost, cybersecurity, and integration.

Core team member defining the overall technology roadmap, leading transition and transformation by developing technical designs that meet business, usability, performance, cost, cybersecurity, and integration requirements. Conducts research and evaluation of current technology trends and industry practices to inform strategy.

Effective communication of technical information to business, clinical, technical, and executive audiences, articulating trade‑offs and rationale for recommendations.

Collaboration with staff at all levels, balancing collaboration with the need to execute and prioritize work.

Business‑driven, people‑focused leadership with influencing, storytelling, organizational, multi‑tasking, presentation, and time‑management skills. Serves as a role model and mentor, taking accountability for individual and group responsibilities.

Established credibility, procurement of buy‑in, and leadership of multidisciplinary teams in a fast‑paced, matrixed environment, partnering with senior business leaders. Proven track record of delivering integrated solutions in complex environments with multiple delivery teams.

Develop and maintain strategic partnerships with technology vendors, startups, and industry leaders to accelerate strategy.

Data‑driven decision making and continuous improvement of services with strong analytic and problem‑solving skills.

Sound business and financial acumen, contributing to vendor management and contract negotiations in partnership with operational owners.

Develop, implement, and monitor policies, procedures, and standards in collaboration with other Technology and Risk Management leaders to ensure alignment and effectiveness across the organization, and lead Business Continuity and Disaster Recovery planning.

Other related duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Information Systems or a related field and 10 years of related experience, including previous Principal Solution Architect or similar architecture role.

Leadership gravitas and experience developing and overseeing solution architecture and large‑scale enterprise design.

Broad knowledge of technology trends and robust industry understanding.

Robust understanding of cyber threats and effective mitigation strategies through architecture and design.

Experience in vendor relationship management and leading IT transformational initiatives in complex environments.

Relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.

Preferred Qualifications

Master’s degree in a related field.

Experience in hospital, medical education, research, or related healthcare fields.

New facility technology‑related design and implementation experience.

Experience managing strategic partnerships.
