Job Overview Pratt Institute is seeking a

Part‑Time Stationary Engineer

to join its Facilities Management Team. The role involves inspecting and monitoring all power plant equipment, performing routine repairs, and ensuring normal operation of campus power facilities.

Key Responsibilities

Start up all power plant equipment as needed for normal operation, including equipment in outlying buildings adjacent to campus.

Inspect boilers, generators, and other equipment; make routine repairs and perform electrical troubleshooting when required; take emergency action as needed for abnormal conditions and report to the chief engineer.

Prepare lists of needed supplies, hardware, equipment, and inventory under the direction of the chief engineer.

Perform maintenance on critical equipment beyond the skills of regular maintenance personnel.

Estimate steam and electricity consumption required for the day or night and ensure sufficient equipment operation.

Requirements Education High school diploma or equivalency preferred.

Experience Five years of previous experience as stationary engineer required.

Knowledge and Skills

Working knowledge of the operation of all plant equipment, including fuel oil pumps, heaters, burners, controls, sump pumps, draft control, plant instrumentation, and meters (flowmeters, smoke, carbon dioxide, draft, recording meters, feedwater testing).

Knowledge of engines, pumps, steam and electric generators, blowers, electrical controls, circuit breakers, switch gear, steam‑operated equipment such as heat exchangers, reducing and other control valves.

Licenses in good standing as required by governmental authorities.

License Must have a valid NYC Stationary High Pressure Boiler Operating license.

Physical Requirements

Work on one’s feet: Approx. 70–85% of the workday.

Operate dangerous equipment or handle hazardous materials: Approx. 80–90% of duties, per safety procedures.

Mobility: Ability to stand for extended periods of time.

Heights: Ability to safely climb ladders.
