Processing Archivist – Alexis Carrel Collection
The Processing Archivist of the Alexis Carrel Collection is a part‑time (20 hours per week) term position located in the Booth Family Center for Special Collections at Georgetown University.
Job overview: The eight‑month hire will report directly to the Head of Archival Processing and will arrange and describe the papers of biologist Alexis Carrel, a Nobel Laureate. The position is donor funded and its purpose is to make the collection accessible and visible to researchers. The project consists of approximately sixty cubic feet of material including manuscripts, correspondence, laboratory notebooks, photographs, and other items. Portions of the collection have been partially processed by previous archivists. The Processing Archivist will preserve the collection in accordance with professional best practices and institutional guidelines, and will craft an online searchable archival finding aid for the collection.
Responsibilities
Arrange and rehouse collection materials following archival best practices
Import existing inventories and metadata into the department’s collection management platform
Create an archival finding aid using ArchivesSpace
Additional responsibilities include contributing to the department’s reference and research services, supporting the promotion of the collection through research, exhibition work, blog posts, and social media.
Work Interactions The Processing Archivist reports to the Head of Archival Processing and collaborates closely with archivists, librarians, curators, and staff at the Booth Family Center for Special Collections. Direct, regular contact will be maintained with library staff and researchers (in person, email, phone, or chat). Consultations will be made with the Library’s Metadata Services unit on cataloging questions and metadata standards.
Qualifications
A Master's degree accredited by the ALA in Library or Information Science, or an advanced degree in a relevant discipline with archival management and special collections training; comparable education and experience may also be considered.
One or more years of professional experience in an archival setting.
Experience preparing DACS‑compliant finding aids in an archival content management system such as ArchivesSpace, Archivist Toolkit, or Archon.
Excellent written and verbal communication, and strong organizational skills.
Knowledge of basic preservation interventions for manuscript materials.
Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a dynamic team environment.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience working with manuscript collections.
Experience staffing a special collections service point.
Compensation Scheduled hourly rate: $25.22. Anticipated compensation range: $25.40 to $30.41 per hour. Projected salary or hourly pay range: $21.16 to $35.29. The role is on‑campus and part‑time; 20 hours per week, eight‑month term.
