The Controller provides strategic financial leadership and oversight, ensuring accurate reporting, strong internal controls, and data‑driven insights that support company growth. You’ll serve as the financial steward, implementing systems that minimize risk, maximize profitability, and enable informed decision‑making across all levels. This role requires exceptional analytical skills, deep construction accounting expertise, and the ability to translate complex financial information for non‑financial stakeholders. You’ll collaborate with Project Managers, the Director of Production, and the CEO to optimize project profitability and support our goal of becoming San Francisco’s premier high‑end remodeling company. Essential Duties & Responsibilities
Financial Management & Strategy (30%)
Serve as active management team member, providing financial insights and recommendations. Prepare and present monthly financial analysis, insights, and process improvement recommendations. Develop annual operating budget by November 30th; complete month‑end close by the 7th and issue financial reports by the 10th. Provide variance analysis with clear explanations and recommended actions. Document accounting procedures in SOPs and ensure integration between QuickBooks Online, Buildertrend, and other systems. Job Costing & Project Profitability (25%)
Code all expenses weekly and verify documentation. Flag unusual transactions promptly. Partner with Project Managers on “Cost to Complete” reports and monthly over/under billing. Track profitability, GP% variance, labor efficiency, and change order ratios. Internal Controls & Tax Management (15%)
Implement segregation of duties and approval workflows. Conduct internal audits and reconcile all accounts monthly. Ensure GAAP compliance and deliver tax documents to CPA by February 20th. Manage quarterly estimated tax payments and file annual business tax returns. Payroll, Benefits & Compliance (15%)
Review and approve hours weekly; process payroll accurately. Manage onboarding, benefits, 401k, and PTO tracking. Upload workers’ comp hours monthly and ensure compliance with employment laws. Cash Flow & Banking (10%)
Produce weekly 12‑week cash flow forecasts. Manage AR/AP, vendor payments, and client invoicing. Maintain banking relationships and alert the CEO to concerns. Insurance & Vendor Management (5%)
Manage insurance procurement and renewals. Verify subcontractor insurance and licensing before payment. Coordinate 1099 preparation and filing. Knowledge & Skills Required
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field. 5‑8 years of experience in construction or contracting with extensive job costing. Advanced proficiency in QuickBooks Online and Buildertrend. Expertise in budgeting, forecasting, WIP, and cash flow management. Knowledge of GAAP and construction accounting best practices. Skilled in Google Workspace; familiar with Slack and Domo. Excellent communication skills; high integrity and attention to detail. Spanish fluency is a plus. Compensation & Benefits
