Estimator – Heavy Civil Construction (Washington DC - Baltimore)
Metric Geo is partnering with a leading heavy civil contractor in Washington DC - Baltimore to hire an experienced Estimator to support continued growth across major earthwork, utility, site development, and roadway projects statewide.
This is a long-term, full-time role with a stable and well-respected contractor that self‑performs the majority of its work. The company is known for a strong pipeline of DOT, municipal, and private site development projects, excellent leadership, and a culture that values collaboration and professional development.
Responsibilities
Prepare accurate and competitive estimates for heavy civil projects including earthwork and mass grading, underground utilities (water, sewer, storm), roadway & highway construction, site development for commercial and industrial projects.
Review project plans, specifications, geotechnical reports, and addenda to determine scope.
Perform detailed quantity takeoffs using estimating and takeoff software.
Solicit, evaluate, and negotiate vendor and subcontractor pricing.
Develop clear and comprehensive cost structures, including materials, labor, equipment, production rates, and risk factors.
Attend pre‑bid meetings, site visits, and client presentations as needed.
Partner with project management and field operations to support bid strategies and value engineering.
Transition awarded bids into executed projects and assist with estimating‑to‑operations handoff.
Maintain historical cost data and contribute to continuous improvement of estimating processes.
Qualifications
5–10 years of estimating experience in heavy civil construction.
Strong understanding of site development, grading, utilities, and roadway scopes.
Proficiency in HCSS HeavyBid, Agtek, Bluebeam, or similar software (preferred but not required).
Ability to read and interpret civil engineering drawings, specs, and geotechnical reports.
Strong math, analytical, and communication skills.
Proven ability to work independently on multiple estimates and meet deadlines.
Field experience (Superintendent, Project Engineer, or Project Manager) is a strong plus.
