Senior Principal Engineer - Automation Engineering – Systems and Digital Integration At Lilly, we unite caring with discovery to make life better for people around the world. We are a global healthcare leader headquartered in Indianapolis, Indiana, and we are building the Lilly Medicine Foundry—a new center for advanced manufacturing and drug development. This facility will bring research and manufacturing together to accelerate innovative solutions, increase capacity for clinical‑trial medicines, and reduce costs and environmental impact.

The Senior Principal Engineer will work as a member of the Automation Engineering Department at Eli Lilly, Foundry. The engineer will provide automation support across site and for capital projects, driving a right‑first‑time facility start‑up and continued support of ongoing manufacturing operations.

Key responsibilities include:

Technical leadership and mentorship of the process control team—design, philosophy, implementation, and commissioning.

Coordinating and implementing process control work; developing and executing the Automation Engineering Project Plan.

Leading site area leads and system integrators through functional requirements, design specifications, DCS application software, and test specifications.

Participating in design reviews, automation application software reviews, and equipment and software FATs.

Leading a team of automation engineers during commissioning; providing periodic status updates to Project Management.

Devising functional requirements and control strategies for automation systems in collaboration with Process Engineering.

Designing, coding, configuring, and testing DCS software (sequence logic, graphics, batch software).

Troubleshooting and tuning system integration across platforms and sites.

Implementing and supporting electronic systems (e.g., plant historians) that capture process automation production data.

Maintaining validated state of control systems in line with Lilly quality standards—including validation strategy development and documentation.

Providing automation support for capital projects and new product introductions.

Promoting automation to improve productivity, operational efficiency, and compliance.

Building a corporate network and leveraging expertise when needed.

Organizational capability requirements:

Set and reinforce standards for automation work products in partnership with consultants and compliance.

Demonstrate initiative, planning, prioritization, and commitment to timelines.

Show strong technical curiosity, problem‑solving skills, and continuous improvement mindset.

Influence peers and business partners effectively.

Communicate clearly in both technical and non‑technical contexts.

Understand GMP, regulatory requirements, and computer system validation.

Basic requirements:

B.S. in Engineering with experience in Automation Engineering—preferably in major pharmaceutical manufacturing handling system integration of applications, systems, and platforms.

8+ years of experience in Biopharma engineering, operations, or manufacturing.

Additional preferences:

Experience designing, developing, commissioning, and qualifying highly automated greenfield manufacturing sites utilizing SCADA, DCS, MES, LIMS, and middleware (e.g., DeltaV, Rockwell, Syncade, LabVantage, OSI PI, OPC).

Experience developing native and custom application interfaces for data communication, ETL, and parsing non‑standard equipment protocols.

Experience commissioning, qualifying, and supporting inter‑connectivity between SCADA, DCS, MES, LIMS, and historians.

Experience facilitating and driving organizational decision‑making.

Initial location: Lilly Technology Center, Indianapolis.

Permanent location: Lilly Medicines Foundry, Lebanon, Indiana.

Compensation and Benefits

Actual compensation will depend on candidate’s education, experience, skills, and geographic location. The anticipated wage for this position is $114,000–$181,500. Full‑time employees are eligible for company bonuses and a comprehensive benefit program, including 401(k) participation, pension, paid time off, medical/dental/vision coverage, prescription drug benefits, flexible benefits, and well‑being programs.
