Position Summary The Breastfeeding Peer Counselor will have direct responsibility for providing basic information about breastfeeding promotion and management to expectant and lactating women. They promote breastfeeding through informal interaction, lead/provide breastfeeding support groups, and provide telephone/in‑person assistance to nursing mothers.
Responsibilities
Contacts all prenatal women interested in breastfeeding referred by WIC personnel.
Provides breastfeeding counseling and follow‑up based on Nutrition Practice Guidelines and BFPC Policy and Procedures.
Provides written and verbal information about breastfeeding to all prenatal women.
Schedules on‑ or off‑site breast‑feeding workshops as needed for WIC participants and community residents.
Evaluates all breastfeeding educational material for appropriateness.
Provides in‑service training for TCA Health staff on the nutritional and socioeconomic aspects of breastfeeding, as well as the myths.
Documents all WIC client contacts using Peer Counselor codes and case notes in IWIC.
Recommends breastfeeding mothers and babies for additional support when needed.
Monitors individual progress by follow‑up calls, mailings, and home visits.
Deliver breastfeeding education at all TCA Health sites, including WIC, and provide education to community agencies in collaboration with TCA Health.
Attends all meetings, conferences, and trainings as assigned via telephone or off‑site.
Completes Peer Counselor reports on a weekly basis.
Travels to WIC sites on assigned days.
Performs other duties as assigned to support program goals.
Follows role assignments that align with Patient Centered Medical Home Standards and participates in all Patient Centered Medical Home efforts.
Assumes additional duties as assigned by management.
Minimum Qualifications
Good organizational skills and detail oriented.
Ability to provide service in a discrete, confidential, and sensitive manner.
Ability to make sound judgments.
Education Requirements
Minimum High School Diploma/GED completed.
Completion of Loving Support Breastfeeding Peer Counselor Training.
Physical Demands
While performing the duties of this job, the employee will be required to walk and/or stand most of the day.
