What You’ll Do
Assists the surgeons with surgery, wound closure and dressing. Facilitates patient and procedure flow through the OR and ensures the provision of high-quality patient care on a day-to-day basis. The Operating Room Nurse First Assist practices within the Patient and Family Centered Care Model and will assess, plan, implement and evaluate care for patients, coordinate ancillary staff and collaborate with interdisciplinary health care team.
Accountabilities
Assist Surgeon with surgery, wound closure and dressing Surgical tasks include, but are not limited to, opening and closing surgical sites, exposure of the surgical site, harvesting grafts, dissecting tissue, removing tissue, implanting devices, and altering tissues Position the patient per the surgeon’s instruction Provide visualization of the operative site by ensuring appropriate placement and securing of retractors with or without padding; pack site with sponges, manipulate tissue, suction, irrigate and use proper body mechanics to prevent obstruction of the surgeon’s view Utilize techniques to assist with hemostasis by clamping or cauterizing vessels or tissue, tying or ligating clamped vessels or tissue, applying hemostatic clips and placing local hemostatic agents Participate in volume replacement or auto transfusion techniques as appropriate Assist with closure of body planes and close skin as directed (suture, staples, etc.) Select and apply appropriate wound dressings Assist in securing drainage systems to tissue Safely and competently administer pharmaco-therapeutics, adhering to medication policies and monitoring outcomes Demonstrate skill in the use of appropriate equipment Assist the surgeon during procedures and perform other functions during surgery as directed Assist with positioning, prepping and draping of the patient; may perform these actions independently if directed by the surgeon Maintain knowledge of basic knot tying techniques (two-handed, one-handed, instrument tie) Assist at the completion of the procedure by affixing and stabilizing drains, cleaning the wound and applying dressings; assist with casts, splints and abduction devices Remove sutures and/or skin staples/clips during intra-operative phase, as requested by the surgeon Performs other duties as assigned
Qualifications
Who you are: Minimum three years of recent operating room nursing first assist experience Excellent communication and interpersonal skills; professional communication with detailed and respectful tone Ability to maintain enthusiasm with high volume and variety of duties Interest in learning procedures and software functionalities that improve effectiveness and efficiency Organized with ability to prioritize and multi-task Reliable, patient and professional Calm and effective under stress Interpret, adapt and apply guidelines and procedures appropriately Ability to develop and maintain professional relationships with patients, medical staff, coworkers and the public; demonstrate empathy and tact Team player with a positive attitude; ability to work with a diverse population and maintain professionalism Promotes teamwork through collaboration; maintains confidentiality on patient issues
Requirements
Active CT Registered Nurse license Associate Degree in Nursing; BSN preferred Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) within 90 days of start date Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS/BLS) within 30 days of start date PALS Pediatric Advanced Life Support within 90 days of start date Certified Registered Nurse First Assistant (CRNFA), or Certified First Assistant, or Certified Surgical First Assistant (CFA)
