Overview The Clinical Dietitian II works closely with the multidisciplinary healthcare team to coordinate evidence‑based medical nutrition therapy that aligns with patient‑focused medical goals.

Responsibilities include applying the Nutrition Care Process (NCP) through a nutrition‑focused physical exam, diagnosing and treating malnutrition, and monitoring patient progress.

The role also involves business functions such as resource management, compliance participation, quality improvement, policy development, community program involvement, and mentoring of interns and junior dietitians.

Responsibilities

Assess nutritional needs using standardized practice and critical thinking; identify nutrient requirements based on age, disease, and individual needs.

Act as a liaison between the clinical team, medical specialties, and ancillary services.

Assist with compliance to Joint Commission, CMS, HFAP, and other accrediting agency standards.

Attend medical rounds, patient care conferences, and continuing education/ staff meetings; participate in quality improvement initiatives.

Develop, implement, and monitor nutrition care plans; participate in discharge planning and provide education using behavioral change techniques.

Document all aspects of nutrition care in the medical record, ensuring regulatory compliance.

Create and update evidence‑based protocols in the clinical area and train others on current best practices.

Identify professional development needs, mentor colleagues, and pre‑cept interns throughout the year.

Participate in clinical research, on‑the‑job training, or QI projects; design and test interventions to improve quality outcomes.

Education Requirements

Bachelor’s degree from a US regionally accredited university or college with coursework approved by the Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics (ACEND).

Master’s in a related dietitian field for new graduates becoming licensed after 1/1/2024.

Completion of an ACEND‑accredited Coordinated Program in Dietetics or Dietetic Internship totaling at least 900 hours (1,200 hours for programs beginning 2012).

Licensure / Certification Requirements

Registered Dietitian (RD) by the Commission of Dietetic Registration (CDR).

Licensed as a Dietitian/Nutritionist (LDN) by the North Carolina Board of Dietetics and Nutrition; some positions allow licensure within one month of hire.

If less than five years of experience, certification in a clinical specialty (e.g., CDCES, CNSC, CNSD, CSR, CSP, CSSD, CSGN, CLE, BCLE) or an advanced degree; specialization certification may be obtained within six months of hire.

Appropriate credentialing for billing purposes (NPI, Medicare/Medicaid Provider, BCBSNC Provider) may be required within one month of hire.

Maintenance of certification (e.g., CDCES) may be required for billing purposes.

Professional Experience Requirements

Three years as an RD with two years of experience in a clinical specialty or three years of nutrition experience in a tertiary care, teaching hospital; specialty certification required.

Five years of experience as an RD, with continuous certification until at least five years of experience (or longer for certain positions such as Nutrition Support Team).

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge of the Nutrition Care Process and ability to apply all steps.

Comprehensive understanding and application of medical nutrition therapy.

Proficiency in Motivational Interviewing.

Critical thinking, problem‑solving, and collaboration skills.

Effective written and verbal communication with patients, public, hospital staff, and physicians.

Ability to work independently on assigned patient care units.

Ability to counsel and educate peers.

General knowledge of nutrient analysis, word processing, and spreadsheet software.
