About the Position TravelNurseSource is working with Magnet Medical to find a qualified Labor/Delivery RN in Honolulu, Hawaii, 96813. The Registered Nurse (RN) in Labor and Delivery (L&D) provides comprehensive care to women during labor, delivery, and the immediate postpartum period. The L&D nurse manages both routine and high-risk pregnancies, monitors fetal and maternal well-being, and assists with deliveries. Collaboration with obstetricians, midwives, anesthesiologists, and other healthcare professionals ensures safe, compassionate, and effective care for mothers and newborns.

Key Responsibilities

Pre-Labor and Admission Assessment

Assess and monitor the health of pregnant women at various stages of labor, including gathering history, vital signs, and physical assessments.

Perform non-stress tests (NSTs), monitor fetal heart tones, and evaluate uterine activity for labor progression.

Educate patients on labor and delivery processes, pain management options, and what to expect during childbirth.

Labor Support and Monitoring

Monitor labor progress through contraction patterns, cervical dilation, fetal heart rate, and maternal vitals.

Administer medications (e.g., epidurals, Pitocin) as prescribed and monitor effects.

Provide continuous emotional support and pain management through comfort measures and encouragement.

Assist with amniotomy and other procedures as directed by the care team.

Assisting with Delivery

Assist obstetricians or midwives during vaginal deliveries with instrumentation, suctioning, and related actions.

Participate in cesarean sections by maintaining sterile field and providing immediate newborn care.

Perform neonatal resuscitation and initial newborn assessment after birth.

Postpartum Care

Monitor health and recovery of mother and newborn in the immediate postpartum period.

Support breastfeeding, including latch techniques and infant care education.

Provide education on postpartum recovery and newborn care.

Documentation and Reporting

Document assessments, interventions, medications, and progress in the electronic health record (EHR).

Maintain accurate records of labor and delivery processes and monitoring results.

Collaboration and Communication

Work with obstetricians, anesthesiologists, neonatologists, and other team members to plan individualized care.

Communicate with patients and families about progress and options; obtain informed consent when necessary.

Infection Control and Safety

Follow infection control procedures to maintain a safe environment.

Ensure equipment is sterilized and functioning, including fetal monitoring devices and delivery instruments.

Emergency and High-Risk Situations

Recognize signs of complications and initiate or escalate care as needed.

Respond to obstetric emergencies, such as shoulder dystocia or neonatal resuscitation, using established protocols.

Administer medications and interventions for high-risk pregnancies (e.g., hypertension, gestational diabetes, infections).

Patient Education and Advocacy

Provide education and support on labor, delivery, newborn care, and postpartum recovery.

Advocate for patient preferences and informed decision-making.
