Controller - Job Description (Construction Industry)

Position Summary

The Controller will lead the accounting and financial operations for a construction-focused organization. This role oversees financial reporting, job costing, Work in Progress (WIP) schedules, budgeting, and compliance. The Controller partners closely with project managers and leadership to ensure accurate financial data, strong internal controls, and effective forecasting across all active jobs.

Core Responsibilities

Financial Management & Accounting Operations

Oversee all daily accounting functions including General Ledger, Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable, Payroll, and Cash Management.

Lead the month-end and year-end close processes, ensuring accuracy and timeliness.

Prepare and analyze financial statements in accordance with GAAP.

Manage bank reconciliations, journal entries, and account reconciliations.

Maintain strong internal controls to support audit readiness and safeguard company assets.

Coordinate annual reviews or audits with external accounting firms.

Construction Accounting & Job Costing

Oversee the job costing process, ensuring accurate labor, material, subcontractor, and equipment cost allocation.

Review job cost reports regularly and collaborate with Project Managers to address variances.

Maintain job budgets, committed costs, and estimated completion values.

Support contract accounting processes including change orders, retention, and progress billing.

WIP Reporting & Forecasting

Prepare monthly Work in Progress (WIP) schedules, analyzing over/under billings, cost-to-complete, and gross margin performance.

Lead monthly job review meetings with Project Managers to update forecasts and estimated completion costs.

Provide financial insight on project profitability, trends, and potential risks.

Maintain backlog reports and support long-term cash flow and revenue forecasting.

Operational & Strategic Support

Partner with project, field, and operational teams to ensure financial alignment and transparency across the organization.

Improve processes, reporting tools, and accounting system utilization.

Support annual budgeting and ongoing financial planning activities.

Maintain confidentiality of sensitive financial and organizational information.

Perform additional projects or duties as assigned by leadership.

Required Skills & Experience

Technical Competencies

Strong knowledge of construction accounting, including job costing, WIP, retention, and percentage-of-completion accounting.

Advanced Excel skills (pivot tables, VLOOKUP, modeling).

Experience with construction accounting or ERP systems (e.g., Sage, Viewpoint, Procore, CMiC, Foundation).

Solid understanding of GAAP and audit standards.

Analytical Skills

Ability to interpret financial and job data to identify trends, risks, and opportunities.

Skilled in forecasting, variance analysis, and project profitability analysis.

Detail-oriented with strong organizational and multitasking skills.

Communication & Leadership

Effective communicator with the ability to collaborate across departments and with all levels of leadership.

Experience presenting financial data to executives and project teams.

Prior leadership or team supervisory experience is a plus.
