Senior Manufacturing Engineer – Varian Medical Systems (on site in Palo Alto, CA)
Lead and optimize manufacturing processes within the machine shop, brazing, welding, and linear accelerator assembly areas. Maintain safety, quality, and efficiency while driving continuous improvement, automation initiatives, and new product introductions.
Responsibilities
Develop, document, and optimize manufacturing processes for machining, brazing, welding, and linear accelerator assembly.
Own development and maintenance of process parameters, work instructions, and control plans.
Troubleshoot process and equipment issues to maintain production efficiency and minimize downtime.
Drive root‑cause analysis and corrective actions for non‑conformances or process deviations.
Specify, procure, and validate manufacturing equipment, tooling, and fixturing.
Develop optimized tooling solutions, implement preventive maintenance plans, and perform process capability studies.
Evaluate and select appropriate materials, brazing alloys, and filler metals.
Develop and qualify welding and brazing procedures per AWS, ASME, etc.
Support metallurgical analysis and materials testing for process validation and failure investigations.
Lead continuous improvement initiatives to reduce waste, improve cycle time, and enhance throughput.
Apply Lean, Six Sigma, and DFMA principles to optimize production layouts and process flow.
Partner with Design Engineering, Quality, and Production teams to support design‑for‑manufacturability and new product introduction.
Train and mentor operators and junior engineers in best practices for machining, brazing, and welding.
Ensure compliance with EHS and ISO quality standards.
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or related field (master’s preferred). 8+ years manufacturing or process engineering experience (or master’s with 6 years).
Strong background in materials science, machining, metal joining, fixturing, and mechanical assembly.
Proficient with CNC machining, welding symbols, GD&T, and fabrication drawings.
Experience with AWS, ASME, ASTM welding and material standards.
Hands‑on experience with process control, SPC, and quality systems.
Knowledge of Lean manufacturing and Six Sigma methodologies (Green/Black Belt preferred).
Excellent communication, project management, and cross‑functional collaboration skills.
