Job Summary DeBra‑Kuempel is seeking to fill an HVAC Controls (BAS) Engineer position for the EMCOR Services Automated Controls division in our Cincinnati, Ohio location. ESAC is seeking an energetic Building Automation System (BAS) engineering candidate – from seasoned control engineers to entry‑level individuals with an HVAC interest/background and desire to start a new direction from field work. The successful candidate will join our growing automation design team, supporting projects in the commercial and industrial markets.

The controls engineer plays a critical role in designing the system architecture, setting the installation plan and pace at the beginning of a project. The candidate will possess or develop skills in designing automatic temperature control and energy management systems, which includes producing control schematics, wiring diagrams, sequences of operation, programming, and bill of material lists based on customer needs and/or project plans and specifications. Training, if applicable, includes 6‑12 months of application engineering, assisting field technicians on live systems and troubleshooting.

Essential Duties And Responsibilities

Attend project turnover meetings with the sales and project team.

Design building automation systems and create project submittals/shop drawings using construction plans and specifications.

Identify any gaps or ambiguity in the project and submit RFIs as required.

Establish & maintain unique customer standards in design/build and plan/spec markets.

With experience, mentor new employees and assist in their growth.

Write control sequences and coordinate design intent with programmer.

Provide operational and technical support/direction to field operations and subcontractors.

Obtain field markups and revise the shop drawings with any changes for owner records.

Maintain backups of all project documentation including record drawings on construction management software program.

Develop strong relationships with new and existing customers.

Escalate critical and/or sensitive issues to the Engineering Manager / Project Manager with recommendations for resolution.

Comply with all Company operating policies, procedures, and safety programs as established.

Perform additional assignments as required by the needs of the company or as directed.

Preferred Education And/or Experience

Associate’s degree in a related engineering/technology field required; bachelor’s degree in mechanical or electrical engineering preferred.

In lieu of an engineering/technical degree, a combination of verifiable DDC specific training and two or more years of experience will be considered.

DDC or PLC design experience preferred.

Strong understanding of low voltage electrical wiring.

Experience in engineering, design, or installation/service of HVAC systems.

Strong understanding of the fundamentals of commercial electrical, HVAC, and control theory.

Knowledge of the construction industry and contract documentation.

Computer Skills

Demonstrated proficiency in Microsoft Office applications (Outlook, Word, Excel); advanced experience with spreadsheets a plus.

Familiarity with AutoCAD, Visio and other electrical, technical, or construction programs.

Familiarity with building architecture and computer networks.

Familiarity with third‑party equipment integration over protocols such as BACnet/Modbus.

Programming experience is a plus.

Physical Demands Regularly required to sit, see, talk, and hear; use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; walk, reach with hands and arms, climb or balance and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. May occasionally lift and/or move up to twenty‑five (25) pounds. Requires navigating to field locations and performing tasks outdoors under various weather conditions.

Work Environment Work involves long periods in front of a computer and travel to field locations where exposure to wet, humid conditions, dust, fumes, chemicals, and varying temperatures may occur. Noise levels are moderate to loud.
