Under the supervision of the Heart and Vascular Center (HVC) leadership, the HVC Sonographer performs a wide variety of technical and professional duties utilizing complex imaging equipment to produce quality ECHO and/or vascular images as requested for subsequent interpretation by the physician. All duties are performed in accordance with departmental and organizational policies and procedures. The sonographer promotes service excellence in all interactions as outlined in the Key Behaviors in the Yale New Haven Health System (YNHHS) Core Success Factors.
Additional duties may include performing cardiac and/or vascular ultrasounds, interpreting study results, coordinating the daily schedule, and providing prompt feedback to physician(s). Staff may be assigned at any HVC location as necessary to meet departmental staffing needs.
Responsibilities
Perform quality and efficient ultrasound exams to assist with a patient's diagnostic work‑up. Follow routine protocols and physician instructions. Repeat examinations due to non‑compliance or inferior quality is minimal.
Provide accurate and compassionate patient care to ensure service excellence, patient cooperation, safety, and satisfaction. Use two patient identifiers when providing care; cross‑check universal identifiers and correct examination order before each exam.
Perform record‑keeping tasks to ensure department goals are met, medical record documentation accuracy, and smooth daily operations. Demonstrate mastery of CPACS by scheduling, completing, and scanning exams independently.
Participate in learning opportunities and assist with training others. Maintain professional registration and certifications, complete mandatory hospital training modules, annual competencies, CPR certification, and document as required.
Follow safety precautions and procedures to ensure a safe environment. Operate equipment safely, minimizing risk of injury to patients.
Qualifications
Education:
A minimum associate degree is required; must be a graduate of an accredited (CAAHEP) School of Diagnostic Sonography or an accredited Allied Health program with additional 12 months of full‑time Diagnostic Medical Sonography instruction.
Experience:
Demonstrated technical skills to meet entry‑level standards of routine HVC imaging.
Licensure:
Cardiac Sonographer: RDCS (ARDMS)/RCS (CCI) in echocardiography certification required. Vascular Sonographer: RVT required. BLS certification obtained within 3 months of hire. CMEs per triennial submission must be maintained.
Special Skills:
Proficiency in routine echo and/or vascular imaging techniques; strong computer skills and medical terminology; good organizational, communication, and customer service skills.
Physical Demand:
Must be able to lift (patient transfers) and push 40 lbs. of portable US equipment; requires extended periods of sitting, walking, and standing; tolerate awkward body positioning at times; accommodations available for disabilities.
