Assistant Professor of Latin American & Latino/a/x Studies
Location: Northampton, MA
Open Date: Sep 3, 2025
The Latin American and Latino/a Studies Program at Smith College invites applications for a tenure‑track position in Latinx Studies at the rank of Advanced Assistant Professor to begin July 1, 2026. Applicants must hold a Ph.D. in the social sciences or Latinx Studies, have at least two years of full‑time teaching experience at the rank of Instructor or above (or equivalent), and possess a robust publication record and/or plan. Successful candidates should be prepared to engage actively with diverse students across the liberal arts. Teaching responsibilities will regularly include an introductory course to Latinx Studies (100‑level) as well as colloquiums (200‑level) and seminars (300‑level) related to the candidate’s field of specialization. We are particularly interested in candidates whose research and teaching interests are grounded in the social sciences and the study of “biopolitics,” broadly understood. Expected areas of focus include governance and practices of migration; the making and unmaking of urban geographies; economies of gender and sexuality; reproductive rights and public health; technological interventions on the web of life; the ecology of the human and more‑than‑human; and other interrogations of the structures of power that impinge on “life processes” and build upon a philosophical and sociological tradition centered on “biopower.”
Salary and benefits: Pay for newly hired assistant professors with a terminal degree beginning the first year of the tenure clock in Fall 2026 is typically between $92,000 and $96,000. Salary decisions depend on teaching and work experience beyond the terminal degree, market, disciplinary, and internal equity factors. A competitive benefits package is also provided.
