Job Summary Located in the nation's capital, the Office of the Attorney General (OAG) is the chief legal office of the District of Columbia. The OAG enforces the laws of the District, defends, and provides legal advice to the District’s government agencies and protects the interests of the District’s residents. This position is located in the Civil Litigation Division.

The Civil Litigation Division is seeking a Section Chief for Section IV. The Division defends the District of Columbia, including its agencies, officers, and employees in civil lawsuits filed in the Superior Court of the District of Columbia and the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia that seek monetary damages, equitable remedies, and other relief.

Duties and Responsibilities The Section Chief will ensure proper case assignment and case transfers to and coverage by Assistant AGs to meet court, mediation, and other deadlines. They will review and approve pleadings, motions, memoranda, discovery, and correspondence; evaluate cases for settlement purposes and authorize or recommend settlement amounts; monitor compliance of AAGs and staff with the Attorney General’s Performance Contract requirements; review litigation outcomes and make timely recommendations for appellate review; attend management meetings with the Deputy Attorney General and other OAG staff; and assist in interviewing, reviewing, evaluating, and disciplining AAGs and staff in accordance with D.C. Rules of Professional Conduct and OAG standards and policies. They must maintain required legal, management, inter‑agency, human‑relations, and management‑labor knowledge and skills, and disseminate timely, accurate, and up‑to‑date data on the Section’s activities.

Qualifications and Education Incumbent must have a Juris Doctor (J.D.) from an American Bar Association accredited law school at the time of appointment. The candidate must have considerable prior experience handling complex civil litigation, preferably including tort, employment, constitutional, and 1983 litigation, and excellent writing and editing skills. Prior managerial experience is preferred.

License and Certification The incumbent must be an active member in good standing of the District of Columbia Bar or have the ability to waive admission and be admitted within 360 days of appointment. If not a current member, proof that the completed D.C. Bar application has been submitted must be provided.

Working Conditions / Environment Work is primarily performed in an office setting. It is largely sedentary, with some walking, handling, and carrying of light to moderately heavy objects such as case records, briefcases, and exhibits.

Salary Range:

$151,000 – $171,000
