HDR New England Transportation Group is seeking a

Traffic Engineer

to work on transportation and safety design projects across New England. The position will be based in our Boston office.

Primary Responsibilities

Perform traffic engineering analysis and design including traffic modeling, signal design, safety analyses, signing and striping design, and strategic highway safety planning.

Prepare traffic signal design plans, signing and striping plans, maintenance traffic plans, and PS&E packages. Work with the roadway design team to evaluate traffic systems and recommend solutions.

Conduct crash analysis and safety studies as part of broader transportation assessments.

Carry out operational traffic analysis using modeling tools from highway capacity software to complex micro‑simulation models, and apply results to engineering practice for isolated intersections, roundabouts, urban arterials, and freeway segments.

Write traffic impact and transportation assessment reports, communicate analysis results clearly, and present findings to the team.

Perform detailed checks and quality-control reviews of design work by other team members.

Act as traffic engineering task leader, coordinating with other disciplines.

Perform other duties as needed.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience with adaptive signalization, transit signal design, and ITS.

Knowledge and experience with New England transportation agency policies and procedures, Complete Streets, NACTO, FHWA, and AASHTO.

Experience in designing traffic control tactics, systems management, communications, ITS systems, and sequencing plans.

Familiarity with PTV Vissim, GuideSign, Bluebeam, and Microsoft Office.

Preference for local candidates.

PTOE certification.

RSP certification.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor's degree.

Experience with traffic analysis and traffic engineering/design.

Professional engineering license recognized by the licensing board for the location of the position offered (e.g., PE or P.Eng).

Hands‑on experience conducting traffic design using CAD platforms including MicroStation, AutoCAD, and GuideSign.

Hands‑on experience conducting operational analysis using HCS, Synchro, VISSIM, and Aimsun.

Hands‑on experience conducting safety analysis using Highway Safety Software.

Proficiency with Microsoft Office, particularly Excel and Word.

Strong verbal and written communication skills.

$93,072 – $132,960 PRO, RI:

$81,438 – $116,340 RCY, CT:

$85,316 – $121,880
