Reports to: Director of Engineering

Job Summary

Join our design-build mechanical contracting firm where you will fulfill an essential role in delivering award-winning design-build projects. The primary role of the Senior Mechanical Engineer is to take a lead in providing engineering expertise for the design of HVAC and plumbing systems in new and existing commercial, government, institutional and multi-family buildings. This role works collaboratively with engineers, drafters, project management and pre-construction teams to design mechanical and plumbing systems in accordance with project and jurisdictional requirements and target budgets. It also works closely with the Estimating and Pre-Construction Teams on design-build project pursuits and supports Project Management and Construction teams with construction administration, delegated design and design reviews of design‑bid‑build project documents.

Role Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from an ABET-accredited institution.
  • Professional Engineering Licensure. MD, DC and VA preferred.
  • More than 10 years of experience in HVAC and plumbing design.
  • Valid driver’s license with own vehicle for transportation to meetings and/or project sites within the DC Metro area (mileage reimbursed).
  • Physical capability to sit, stand, bend, walk, climb, remain in static positions, work at heights, in tight/confined spaces, in dusty areas, and in temperature extremes; ability to carry or lift 5–45 lbs frequently.
  • Ability to conduct technical surveys of mechanical and plumbing systems.
  • Availability to work Monday–Friday with occasional evenings; flexible schedule.
  • Ability to pass background checks and maintain confidentiality; a signed confidentiality agreement is required.

Core Competencies

  • Expertise in HVAC and plumbing engineering.
  • Proficiency with engineering design software, including load estimating and energy analysis programs such as Trane Trace700 and 3D Plus.
  • Thorough understanding of thermodynamics, heat transfer and fluid mechanics.
  • Knowledge of discipline-specific building codes: IMC, IPC, IECC, IgCC, IFGC; familiarity with cross-discipline codes such as IBC, IEBC, NEC, and IFC.
  • Working knowledge of CAD software such as AutoCAD and Revit.
  • Effective communication in English (aural, verbal, written).
  • Project-level leadership experience; preferred experience in design‑build project delivery.
  • Strong technical writing skills with command of English grammar, spelling and diction.
  • Ability to handle and prioritize multiple projects effectively; strong organizational and time‑management skills.
  • Professional interaction with all levels of team members and external clients.
  • Proficiency with MS Office (Outlook, Excel, Word, PowerPoint).

Job Duties and Responsibilities

  • Lead an internal or external project team or work independently to develop proposals in coordination with Pre‑Construction teams.
  • Conduct field surveys of mechanical and plumbing systems.
  • Attend virtual and on-site design and coordination meetings.
  • Execute design tasks including thermal load and energy modeling, ventilation calculations, equipment selection, distribution system design, controls design, specification writing and editing, drafting and modeling.
  • Prepare HVAC and plumbing design, permit and construction documents including reports, drawings and specifications.
  • Perform construction administration activities: submittal review, field review of construction, engineering field reports, punch list creation, RFI response, and start‑up and commissioning support.
  • Provide mentorship to entry‑level engineering staff.
  • Collaborate with in‑house Pre‑Construction, Estimating, Construction and Virtual Design and Construction teams.
  • Perform other tasks and duties as assigned.
