Help shape and execute PIA’s advocacy strategy, and support and grow a strong Political Action Committee with successful fundraising results. Play a key role in representing independent insurance agents before Congress and industry partners, and coordinate with PIA’s Affiliates and their work with state governments.

Execute strategies for promoting policy initiatives and outcomes to include grassroots efforts, federal and state government relations support, and the annual PIA Advocacy Day, and similar advocacy efforts.

Advocacy is at the core of PIA’s mission. Success in this role directly contributes to the visibility, influence, and credibility of independent insurance agents nationwide.

PIA is headquartered in Old Town Alexandria (419 North Lee Street Alexandria, VA 22314) and is a hybrid work environment, currently 2 days on site in the office (Tuesday and a second day either on Wednesday or Thursday).

Essential Job Functions

  1. State/Federal Government Relations
  • Develop Capitol Hill relationships/contacts with committee staff, Members of Congress and their staff to further PIA goals.
  • Explore coalition efforts to maximize PIA’s effectiveness, as well as to increase PIA National prominence.
  • Play a key role in the association’s government relations activity on both the state and federal level.
  • Lead the association’s grassroots efforts by working with PIA state affiliates and National Only States on developing and disseminating targeted grassroots action campaigns.
  • Draft and manage federal and state action alert communications via grassroots advocacy tool VoterVoice.
  • Organize and coordinate state advocacy efforts in states without a PIA affiliate, “National Only States.”
  • Assist PIA state affiliates and National Only States on advocacy efforts including but not limited to legislative/issues research, drafting letters and action alerts, organizing zoom videoconference meetings, webinars and so on.
  • Conduct research and draft issue papers on state and federal issues.
  • Provide support for all advocacy activities, particularly PIA’s congressional fly-in, PIA Advocacy Day, including assisting PIA members scheduling congressional meetings, staffing sessions at the conference, and implementing PIAPAC fundraising initiatives.
  • Serve as the PIA liaison to select regulatory and other industry organizations, including but not limited to drafting letters to state insurance regulators, serving on committees, representing PIA on conference calls and zoom videoconference meetings, and research.
  • Attend, participate in, and report on state and federal policy meetings, hearings, and conferences, as assigned.
  • Attend each PIA governance meeting held each year (one, currently the fall meeting, requires travel, the other is held in Washington, DC area).
  • Process invoices, coordinate with vendors and other duties as required for both PIAPAC and the government relations department.
  • Assist filing PIA quarterly and annual lobbying and contribution reports.
  1. Manage the PIA Political Action Committee (PIAPAC)
  • Manage all administrative functions for the PIA Political Action Committee (PIAPAC), including virtual and in-person fundraising initiatives.
  • Coordinate with compliance firm to ensure accurate Federal Election Commission (FEC) compliance and reporting for the PIAPAC.
  • Process PIAPAC disbursement requests and mail to political campaigns.
  • Implement fundraising initiatives to raise money for the PIAPAC.
  • Maintain and utilize the Quorum Government Relations Database for contributors to PIAPAC and the PIA Advocacy Fund.
  • Keep track of PIAPAC’s key fundraising initiative, the PIA 1931 Club and members who have made individual top contributor levels.
  • Communicate with PIA Affiliates and members on their contributions to the PIAPAC.
  • Order and disseminate signs, plaques, contributor level benefits, etc. as needed for PIAPAC recognition.
  • Serve as the staff liaison to the PIAPAC Board of Directors.
  1. Communications
  • Lead social media efforts for the government relations team
  • Develop content for the PIA Advocacy Blog, PIA Connections Blog, and other PIA publications
  • Create and disseminate necessary advocacy-related press releases, quotes, and other position statements
  • Draft quarterly advocacy newsletter
  • Communicate these efforts to affiliates

Qualifications

  • Excellent communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills, including writing, speaking, advocating, creating ideas, and leading people to action.
  • Basic understanding of FEC rules.
  • Solid understanding of legislative process and willingness to learn Quorum PAC, Voter Voice grassroots software, Canva.
  • Well organized, yet flexible.
  • Willingness to work independently and as part of a bigger team.
  • Ability to take ownership of projects and bring creative ideas to life.
  • Self-starter with demonstrated ability to take initiative, work collaboratively, and see projects through to completion.
  • Highly organized, flexible, and energized by working on a small, high performing team with shared goals.
